Free Music Review: Very Good Album, and Even Better Than Expected!!
Hit: 4 Stars

I would like to start by saying that I saw this album in the store for many months, but decided not to purchase it, because I've heard these Motown songs for years, and I am not usually a fan of cover songs. Also, I was not sure if I would miss the fourth member of the group, who is not longer with them, and be disappointed with the sound. But recently, I saw a presentation on VH1 Soul showing clips of Boyz II Men singing the Motown songs live and an accompanying interview about the album. I decided to purchase the album. I was pleasantly surprised after listening to the first few tracks. The production was well done and the vocal arrangement for the songs was also great. The good thing about this group is that each member has a good enough vocal range to adjust to the sound of many different great original artists who sang the Motown songs. Yet, they still put that Boyz to Men twist on the songs. My only criticism of the album is that on some songs it seems that the focus was more on giving each member of the group an opportunity to sing lead on the song, rather than focusing on the member of the group who could best present the vocals in that song. For example, Nate can sing in falsetto, but that is more comfortably in Shawn's range and sometimes Wanya. I thought those parts were better left to Shawn and Wanya rather than have Nate stretch is range to sing a verse. You will hear this on "Got To Be There." It was best to have Nate sit that song out and sing background and let Shawn and Wanya sing the leads. Nate's voice was great on many of the other songs, but just a bad fit on that one. Also, in the Motown catalogue, I would have liked to hear them sing other songs than some of the ones they chose, but it still worked out well. My favorite on the album was surprisingly, "Easy (like Sunday Morning)" the song originally done by Lionel Richie. The vocal arrangement is amazing. I also loved, "Tracks of My Tears," "All This Love" and "Ribbon in the Sky," which was done acapella. Those were my favorites on the album. I highly recommend checking this album out. It is a testament to true vocal ability in an era when the music business has made that so much less important. Boyz to Men is still the best male R&B group out there. Thanks for reading.

Free Music Review: A delightfully fun album
Hit: 4 Stars

I don't have a particular music preference; I just like good music whatever the genre may be. I didn't grow up listening to Motown music so I have no particular attachment to the original artists. Thus, if another artist wants to sing a cover song, I'll give a listen with an open mind. Although, there is no denying many original artists put their stamp on the songs they sang. "Tracks of My Tears" IS Smokey Robinson. "Ribbon in the Sky" is Stevie Wonder. And let there be no doubt, "Mercy Mercy Me" IS Marvin Gaye. Yet, a cover can be just as enjoyable as the original depending on how well it is performed.

Verdict: These Boyz can sing! They might not hit it out of the park on every note on every song. But overall, I like their harmonizing cover versions. Every song made me smile. Every song was a delightful treat enticing me to listen to the next...truly. The first time I listened to this album I actually looked forward to hearing how they were going to approach the next song.

Unless you are of the mind that "nothing compares to the original so copycats need not even bother," I cannot think of a reason why anyone wouldn't have fun listening to this album.

Free Music Review: The Harmony Kings Are Back
Hit: 4 Stars

At one point Boyz II Men were the biggest R&B group in the world but as Hip Hop and Rap took over, four part harmony and good old fashioned R&B sadly disappeared from the charts. With their eighth CD and second cover album, the Boyz II easily provides the listener with plenty of ear candy. The CD opens with an amazing cover of The Temptations' "Just My Imagination" where Shawn Stockmen's vocals are easily on par with Eddie Kendrick's classic falsetto. Other notable covers include Debarge's All This Love, The Commodores Easy and one of my personal favorite's Smokey Robinson's & The Miracles' The Tracks Of My Tears. Although impossible at this point to add anything to the likes of "It's the Same Old Song," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," or "Money (That's What I Want)" -- no matter how well they are handled, the Boyz easily get the listener's attention again with acapella covers of Ribbon In The Sky and their classic slow jam End Of The Road. All in all a great album for the young and the young at heart.
