Free Music Review: Imitated But Never Duplicated!

Much like New Jack City and Higher Learning, Boyz N The Hood was ahead of its time. I say this about both the film and the soundtrack.
The soundtrack, of course, had your share of rap by Ice Cube (How To Survive In South Central), Main Source (Friendly Game Of Baseball), Monie Love (Work It Out) and 2 Live Crew (Hanging Out). It also had some beautiful instrumentals from Stanley Clarke and Quincy Jones. It had an R & B classic from Tony, Toni, Tone with "Just Me And You" and an underrated song called "Spirit" with a very on-point message.
Others have come along that have tried to duplicate this and the other two films/soundtracks I've named (think Poetic Justice, Menace II Society and Baby Boy) but only a few have even come close (think Set It Off and Jason's Lyric).
Musically, its an example of hip-hop of that era. Its long term influence, however, is much stronger. Quiet frankly, the so-called "artists" of today could learn a thing or two from this and other select albums. Anyway, this soundtrack is recommended both for the points it was trying to make with the music (points which are still relevant today as they were in 1991) and just for a piece of hip-hop history.
