This may be Metheny's best work. It certainly is in the top 5. Metheny returns to his mainstream/electro jazz style. It is my first intro to Mehldau. They are fabulous together and backed by great bass and drums. I have it on a loop in the car and still love it. Mehldau sounds better than Lyle Mays, which I never would have believed could happen. Mehldau has a more melodic and classical style and blends beautifully with Matheny's guitar. If you like Metheny's earlier works and stuff like his Brecker work, you will love this.
See this group live, no matter the cost. If/When their live album comes out, buy it!

i am a big fan of pat metheny and all his incarnations with various groups, collaborations etc. we flew to vancouver to see him in concert at the orpheum with brad mehldau and the quartet. it was a great experience and just another facet to an incredibly talented and innovative jazz guitarist. totally different than his metheny group/lyle mays recordings, but if you dig pat and know his style you will not be disappointed. brad mehldau is an incredible pianist, classically trained and impressive in his style of play in harmony with pat's guitar stylings. i am listening to it right now! aloha from hawaii!Free Music Review: islander

Both are creative and courageous. Pat has more time under his belt and may not feel fear, but Brad is going to be a creative force and I would expect he and Pat to team up again.
Pat has to be the most articulate (fingers) guitarist in the world. His fast runs are not repetative notes, they are all fingered indedendantly. Lyrical, melodic, rythymic, articulate, and courageous. What a package. Brad will get there soon.

I've always liked Pat Metheny's music; for some reason I always thing of surfing Trestles when I hear his music. I don't have any compelling intellectual or philosophical reasons for recommending this album - I simply like the music.

Free Music Review: Superlative jazz(as you'd expect)

This is an album that fits into the Metheny quartet trifecta....Question and Answer, Like Minds, and this quartet. Simply straight ahead jazz, and not of the PMG genre, where jazz sensibilities sometimes get tested. Having seen the concert twice, i'm impressed...very listenable and expressive. All 4 artists are absolutely outstanding in their own right and they play off each other beautifully.
