During these days of listening to country music, one may have noticed that this format has frequently blended with pop forms of music, including, for example, rhythm and blues, hip hop, and hard rock 'n' roll. This practice is not new, for it dates back as early as the 1950s (recall the days of rockabilly), but it has become more frequent in the last few years. Many of the current artists have adopted this mode of presenting their music, which straddles country and pop, and it elicits both positive and negative views by the audience. However, there are some country artisits who stick to the field of pure country music, including Brad Paisley, a singer from West Virginia. He is noted for his sense of humor in his songs and in his videos, and for the great variety of country styles in his performances. His latest album, "Time Well Wasted", carries on his traditions in performing country music, as can be heard in the tracks and seen by watching the videos that accompany the songs that have been released as singles.

The sixteen items contained in this album demonstrate his talent in venturing into a great diversity of sound, tempo, and flavor. Against a backdrop of a fast thumping beat, hurried fiddle, and guitar, "The World" (the 3rd single released) tells his girl that she means the world to him, even though others know her as just another (fill in the blank here) as though she is just one in the crowd. Next comes another hit, "Alcohol", the first single from this album to be released. In a slow waltz rhythm, this piece is sung in a first person manner as if alcohol was a live character, listing all of the things this ingredient can make a person do, or the results of those actions, the good times and some consequences. This sounds like a party song with the whole crowd joining in. "Waitin' On A Woman" is a soft, traditional country track in which the man tells the story of waiting for a woman in several situations: joining him on a date; the wedding day; and in heaven, waiting for her to come later. Instrumental sections can be found in the middle and at the ending parts. "I'll Take You Back" is quick-paced, with fast drumming and guitar picking in a Western style, and brisk words. In a sarcastic tone, the man informs his woman that he will take her back when unlikely, improbable events happen. Next comes "She's Everything", the fourth single and a current hit on the country charts, a soft, slow pick in which the man describes his woman in numerous metaphorical terms: everyting he wanted, for many pastimes and in numerous roles, that she will always be his woman.

The album continues with "You Need A Man Around Here", marked by a bouncy, Western swing rhythm: where he notices a woman who is all alone, based on all the evidence in her home, she could benefit from having a man (him) around her place. This would make a great hit if released as a single. Next comes "Out In The Parking Lot" with Alan Jackson as a guest, a neotraditional, moderate tempo piece featuring sliding guitar and fiddle in the background and in instrumental sections at the end. The theme is attending an outdoor concert, standing in the parking lot watching and listening to the band members playing, as well as watching people in the audience. This would also make a great country hit if released as a single. The slow and soft "Rainin' You" follows, in which rain comes to symbolize the girl he used to have. He would like it to rain because it feels like he's with her when he stands out in the rain. Things are also slow in the traditional sounding "Flowers", where the popular romantic gift is compared to a love relationship: flowers being cut, boxed up, delivered to the door, only to be thrown away a short time later. The man once had a relationship that he blew, as if he threw the flowers away. The following song "Love Is Never Ending" marks a contrast, in which flowers die, people grow old, and times change (in the verses), but love never does these things (in the chorus). Note that the chorus is faster and more upbeat than the verses.

In keeping with his practice of including a religious song in his albums, a remake of "The Uncloudy Day" appears in a very brief, low volume track. Immediately, "When I Get Where I'm Going" follows, a soft, traditional ballad duet with Dolly Parton, and the second chart hit from this album. This song contemplates what it will be like after he's gone to heaven and left behind the painful life on earth. This is sort of a sequal to the preceding track and has a religious tone.

The remainder of the album plays upon the fun side of things. "Easy Money" is an upbeat, party dance song, about a band whose members used to have modest-paying, ordinary jobs, but now they are raking in the money by playing music shows at clubs. Next, Brad Paisley includes an instrumental in this album, another regular practice of his. Here is "Time Warp", a jazzy, energetic instrumental marked by very fast guitar strumming, fast sliding steel guitar, rapid tinkling of a piano, and fast drum percussion. This later slows down briefly to a blues rhythm, picks up the pace again, tones down the jazz, speeds up again with all the instruments, then ends with a grand finale loud and slow. The last song and next-to-last track is the title track "Time Well Wasted", a soft, neotraditional selection that describes a boy going fishing with his dad; then as a teen staying indoors with his girlfriend watching movies instead of going outdoors to perform chores such as washing cars or raking leaves. The theme is that goofing off while having fun with family or friends when there is work to do is worth the time.

The last track, "Cornography", is presented like a Western country TV comedy, and consists of the Kung Pao Buckaroos talking and telling a story of three guys chasing after the one girl. Little Jimmy Dickens, George Jones, and Bill Anderson play the cowboys, while Dolly Parton plays the girl. This talk show is presented with country guitar music in the background just like in a TV show. This track may come as a surprise to those listeners who did not expect a talk show, and the title is clever and attention-getting.

Overall, this is a package with a wide variety of styles for one artist and shows that Brad Paisley is capable of performing many roles and twists, and of providing songs with many different themes and moods. The list of tracks may be long but it is, like the title suggests, worth the time to listen to them and enjoy them.

this CD wil be clutched in my hand! This is a truly fantastic album from start to finish. I come from the UK where you rarely hear country music and my then American fiance sent me Mud on the Tires - I was totally hooked. Brad continues his unmatched skill for writing lyrics we all get about daily life and making them funny, sad and heart wrending in places. My now American husband and I went to see him on tour 2 weeks ago and this album is even better live!! Brad is the Best

Hit: 5 Stars

In the world of country music, this is an excellent singer, I chose this album for the song "When I get where I'm going." and much to my surprise the entire Album was great in my opinion. I felt sure this would win a CMA award, and it did. Also worth the mention, I chose another artist at the same time I purchased this Album, "Believe" was the song I was after, this one also won a CMA award's, it's execellent In my opinion too. The Album for it is: Hillbilly Deluxe , Brooks and Dunn. They are both albums and songs that I strongly feel are worth supporting the artist by buying their Albums.

Great album. My favorite songs are "She's Everything" which he wrote for his wife and the song with Dolly Parton, "When I Get Where I'm Going".

Overall, the songs are great and you can put the songs on repeat all day long.
