Free Music Review: Brand New At Their Finest!
Hit: 5 Stars

So, it looks like Brand New have done it yet again. Somehow they manage to (@ least to a non-Brand New fan) sound like a completely different band on every CD. If you played one song from each of their four CDs to someone who had never heard them before, they probably wouldn't believe they're the same band, and that statement holds true to this CD as well. Their sound is much more diverse no and it seems like they're finding their niche now better than before. Most people know Brand New by their poppy punk/emo songs about failed relationships and growing up, but this CD, like its predecessor "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" is MUCH different!

"Daisy" starts out with an old phonograph-sounding song with a woman singing, and sounds like it's out of the 20's or something. Then bursts into about 2 minutes of non-stop screaming to kick off the first track "Vices." Pure brilliance! The rest of the CD is like a rollercoaster of sound ranging from their mellowest songs yet to some of their heaviest... The CD is phenominal all the way through, but some stand out moments are some of their most experimental. Song 6 "Be Gone," is THE strangest song Brand New have ever created, that much is for sure, and some people may complain because most people can't understand a thing Jesse Lacey is singing on it due to the way the vocals are arranged and abruptly interrupted every half second or so, but it is very much enjoyable and has one of the most unique guitar parts out of all their songs on the rest of the CD.

In fact, "Daisy" is based much less on guitar "riffs" as it is on note-picking and just odd sounds. They've strayed much away from the standard four chord progression into something much more creative and talented. Another thing that makes this CD stand out is the lyrics. Brand New has always had brilliant lyrics, but this is by far their best effort. Most of their messages were pretty easy to understand in the past, but these songs need a bit more attention paid to them to understand what they're trying to get across. The lyrics are a bit more thought out and intentional.

Also, it seems as if Brand New is straying from the standard verse, chorus, verse, chorus, chorus, breakdown, chorus, chorus format that most bands follow. Some songs on this record don't really have a chorus persay and these songs are MUCH less repetitive than previous songs. One might say it's dissappointing because there are so many good parts to sing along to and you'd probably really like it to come back around so you can sing it again, and they fail to do that for you, but I think it's for the better in the end.

This CD DOES have a vibe of "The Devil And God..." like most people are saying, but at the same time, it sounds completely different. The tone and the lyrics may be similar, but the music is quite different, and much more experimental, and Jesse's vocal range is more phenominal than ever.

The best song on the CD MAY quite possibly be its title track "Daisy." It starts out with a reel-to-reel recording of a preacher from the 60's (I believe that's what Jesse said in an interview), and then flows into a melodic metaphor-filled frenzy of despair, followed by a little boy quoting something very hard to understand (the meaning, not what he's saying) and his voice adds something VERY eery to the overall vibe of the song, and the song then picks up to lead on to probably the catchiest part of any song on the entire CD.

The CD proceeds to end with the female voice heard in the opening of the first track, finishing out the song which she had started to make for a teriffic end to a teriffic album!

This is by far Brand New's most creative album to date, and even if you end up not liking it, you'll still have to admire the fact that they've managed to still keep their sound "Brand New" from album to album and have created another which is completely unique from anything else they've ever done.

Daisy Poster

Formed in 2000, Brand New - Jesse Lacey, Vincent Accardi, Brian Lane and Garrett Tierney - have established critical acclaim for their innovative and boundary breaking music. The band's head-turning 2001 debut Your Favorite Weapon (Triple Crown Records) was followed by 2003's gold-certified sophomore album Deja Entendu, which Rolling Stone called a "masterpiece" and the New York Times proclaimed "extraordinary." In 2006 the band released their critically acclaimed major-label debut The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me (Interscope) and earned raves for yet another chapter in their genre defying career from SPIN, Blender, NY Times, LA Times, and Billboard among others. The band also appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O'Brien to perform the hit single "Jesus."

Now the band is set to take us down another path with their defiant new album, Daisy. The new record features a collection of songs produced by longtime friend Mike Sapone and mixed by Dave Sardy (Rage Against the Machine, Cold War Kids, Slayer). Brand New continues to break the mold and in true Brand New form, they delve into new musical territory that will astonish both critics and fans alike.
