Free Music Review: An Incredible Debut Album, From An Incredible Band...
Hit: 5 Stars

One day, I was posting on a punk music message bored (I don't think it is operating anymore.) and I saw a thread about a type of music dubbed "emo". Seeing as how I have never heard of the style of music before I naturally became curious and decided to explore this new style of punk. I made a thread and asked if anyone could give me a list of good emo bands. When someone replied they gave me a list which included a band by the name of Brand New. So after downloading the songs "Seventy Times Seven", "Secondary" and "Am I Wrong?" (which is an excellent cover of a Love Spit Love song, unfortunatly not included on Your Favorite Weapon) I decided that their album was a must have. I have been listening to Brand New and emo music in general for about a year and a half now and I must say, this is one of the finest emo albums I have heard. I have owned it for about a year now and the songs are still as interesting and engaging as they were a year ago.

Now I will split up the songs and review each song individually pointing out their pro's and con's (not that there are many :P)

*Note: All Song Reviews will be out of 10.

1. The Shower Scene- Energy. That word basically sums up this song. A great way to begin the album. It's one of the heavier songs on the album but it gets the listener pumped up and leaves them begging for more. The slightly distorted vocals are a nice touch as well. 8/10

2. Jude Law And A Semester Abroad- The bands first single, and rightfully so! This song is great. Listening to the very well-written lyrics you can tell that this song is about a bitter dispute between Mr. Lacey and a girl who attends college in Europe. You will love this song guarenteed. 10/10

3. Sudden Death In Carolina- This is one of my favorite tracks on the album. It's a very upbeat and fun song to listen to, despite the rather gruesome lyrics. (I love the lyrics by the way.) 8/10

4. Mix Tape- Brand New slows things down a bit here, yet still manage to keep it interesting and energetic. The only thing I don't like about this song is the end. It goes into a bunch of random guitar effects and squeels of feedback and gets rather annoying after a while. 8/10

5. Failure By Design- This song is alright. Just alright. A lot of people seem to like it so i'll keep that in mind, however I just don't find it to be a good song at all and I'm not a big fan of the lyrics. It's not a horrible song by any means, just not that great. 6/10

6. Last Chance To Lose Your Keys- A little bit poppier than the rest of the album, but its still a pretty good song. The triple vocal harmony at the end never fails to amaze me. 8/10

7. Logan To Government Center- This song is incredibly underated, but I guess that's because it's one of those songs that takes a long time to fully appreciate. The first time you listen to it it may seem dull and annoying but listen to it a few times over. If you don't like it, thats cool but if you do it really changes from the most boring song on the album to one of the best. 9/10

8. The No Seatbelt Song- An amazing semi-acoustic song. The lyrics are pure-genious, and this song has a dark, depressing feel to it. Everytime I listen to it, it sends shivers down my spine. Great song. 9/10

9. Seventy Times Seven- The first song I heard by Brand New and an instant favorite, and still remains to be my favorite to this day. This song has everything a good emo soung should. Awesome dual vocals, Ggreat guitars, screaming breakdown and great lyrics about heart break, infidelity and being stabbed in the back by your best friend. (For those of you who don't know, John from Taking Back Sunday and Jesse from Brand New were best friends and John slept with Jesse's girlfriend and that's what this song is about. Check out "There's No "I" In Team by Taking Back Sunday to hear about the same incident from John's point of view)This song is amazing. The lyrics are awesome and are worth buying the album for. If you only listen to one song on this CD let it be this one. Seriously. 10/10

10. Secondary- Another underated song...I can somewhat see why this one is though. I personally love it, however it really has nothing special about it...It's still a great song, just nothing unique. 8/10

11. Magazines- Ahhh...I can't stand this song. Brand New made a big mistake when putting this song on this album. This song is not Brand New. It's not even emo. It sounds like it belongs on a Good Charlotte album. The melody is very pop sounding and the lyrics are so immature compared to the rest of the album. It is still bearable to listen to, however I feel this album would be better had this song not been on it. 2/10

12. Soco Amaretto Lime- An INCREDIBLE acoustic track. I wrote incredible in all caps because this song really deserves some attention. Everything about it is great. Lyrics, melody, guitar...everything...A great way to wind up the album too. 10/10

As you can see, I gave nearly all the songs on this album very high ratings (with the exception of Magazines which just plain sucks.) because they DESERVE high ratings. Brand New have created an amazing debut album, and any emo fan should have this in their collection. Wait, anyone who likes good music should have this in their collection!

Now off to review Deja Entendu...
