Free Music Review: TNBT-THE NEXT BIG THING
Hit: 5 Stars

Ok, so I think I over compare many bands to either XTC or The Strokes. I can't help it, right now those two bands are the epitomy of what I like in rock music. Either lush, Beatle-inspired/witty Pop (XTC) or loud, bare-bones gargae rock (The Strokes). Also, those bands are well know...and I'm a lazy reviewer who gets off a little too easy by saying "Oh! Oh! This CD sounds like ______!"

With The Bravery, I would like to say that the vocals sound like Hot Hot Heat....and that muscially the band sounds like The Killers-meets-Franz Ferdinand. But that would be unfair (see the review in Entertainment Weekly). Instead, I would like to say that The Bravery have made a good debut record. Electro/Post-Punk Disco with a hint of Canadian garage rock (The Killer+Franz Ferdinand+Hot Hot Heat). Lyrically, the band is very minimalistic...most of the songs lyrics are simple and only a couple of lines long. And few stretch beyond the usual rock subject matter-with the exception of "Give In" and "The Ring Song" both of which are surprisingly candid. The album's first single, "An Honest Mistake" sounds great...but many could (and have) argue that it sounds just like something off the superior HOT FUSS.

These poor bastards, if only they'd gotten this CD out a few months earlier...anyway, the synth-sounds are sweet (especically on "The Ring Song" which is one of my favorite tracks). Vocally, I was a bit dissapointed the lead singer never "took it up a notch." For the most part, he keeps his cool-half the time I kept expecting him to start screaming (or at least exert a bit more). Other than keeping things a bit too even, though, the guys got a good rock voice. The circus-sounding "Public Service Annoucement" is probably the best track at showcasing what this guy's range COULD be. I really loved this song (sounds as good as anything on Hot Hot Heat's ELEVATOR). This song or "The Ring Song" should be the next single, easy. "Tyrant" a creepy, brooding song sounds awesome with it's snythesizers and keyboards is another possible single contender. This is one of those records you hear, like and then put away. When you think about it, you really don't remember anything too spectacular about it-until you dust it off one day and it bites you in the ass. For this reason, I don't think this album is going to make The Bravery household names. And that's a real shame.

I think greatness could be reached, I love what they've got here...I just think they've set themselves up to be too easily compared. Maybe that's not their fault...but on the next record they need to take a gamble and really stretch out of the current 'flavor-of-the-month' synth-punk genre. The fad will fade, and when it does will The Bravery's bravery come through?

Bravery Poster

BRAVERY THE THE BRAVERY
Forget for a moment the rumors that suggest the lead singer of this New York five-piece used to play in a ska outfit called, yes, Skabba the Hut. It's a given that a band that so brazenly apes the Strokes' scratchy vocals, Interpol's deep bass grooves and the Killers' shimmering new wave melodies is hardly concerned about being written off as unfashionably fashionable. In two years time the Bravery could very well be making robotic Afro-Cuban funk albums, or whatever other hipster style happens to be troubling the charts at the time, and it would suit them just fine. Right now, the group has the neo-post-punk thing nailed, complete with warm-fuzzy tunes like "An Honest Mistake" and "Unconditional," that, if nothing else, should at least manage lure a few more bodies onto the dance-floor. -- Aidin Vaziri
