If you turned on the FM band on your radio in 1961, you know what you would hear? The same thing you would on the AM band on your radio. This is when stations were allowed to simulcast, and it was not until around five years later that this became illegal.
Now, you rightly ask, this is a Breakfast At Tiffany's Score review, what the hell is with the radio history lesson. Well, just follow me.
Let's talk about this AM radio for a second. Let's talk about 1961. No hard rock, no Beatles, no progressive music. There were rockers like Elvis, and teen idols like Bobby Vinton. That was about it.
But there was also popular music, lots of it, from films, broadway shows, novelty records. The big band era had only ended a few years before. Top forty radio still had one foot in a world before rock and roll. That five year old "race music"
That is why a song like "Moon River," could get all over the radio in 1961. That is why Henry Mancini probably wrote it. With its amazing orchestrations, yearning tones, that feel of looking into vulnerable eyes, this was the exact type of song you needed to get on the radio to plug a film in 1961. When rock was new, and radio was still seeped in the very old, in what we just don't hear in popular culture anymore.
So was "Moon River" commercial? Absolutely. Was it there to hook you into the cinema, the album? No doubt. Is it brilliant? You bet. If you can get past the age, understand the context...........well, come on. Just listen for the sound of those vulnerable eyes.
But "Moon River" is just a little piece of this album, which contains all I love about Henry Mancini. All Mancini did was do what some bands are STILL doing--land that big single, then take the album where you want.
There is bop jazz, cha cha, swing, even an Asian experiment. Its all wrapped in the blues, in text or subtext--that take on the blues that is only Mancini. He even mutates "Moon River" into more aggressive styles.
Brilliant, daring, and only dated if you want it to be, this is one classic soundtrack. One from 1961. One from Henry Mancini.

Digitally remastered digipak reissue of the soundtrack to the 1961 celluloid adaptation of Truman Capote's novel that starred Audrey Hepburn. Includes one bonus track 'Wait Until Dark'. Features Henry Mancini's Oscar-winning score which includes the absolutely gorgeous 'Moon River', with a melody even more beautiful than the film's star! Featured musicians include Laurindo Almeida, Ralph Collier, Vince DeRosa, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Rowles, Jack Sheldon and others. RCA/Victor.When you think of Henry Mancini, you inevitably think of either "Peter Gunn" or "Moon River." (Well, maybe "The Pink Panther"--but that became a cartoon show, so it doesn't count!) Breakfast at Tiffany's gave the world the latter tune, and that beautiful melody recurs throughout this soundtrack LP, which remained No. 1 on the Billboard pop charts for 12 weeks in 1961. (Music for Peter Gunn in 1959 was Mancini's only other No. 1 album.) The soundtrack doesn't include Andy Williams's hit single of "Moon River," but then neither did the film. It does, however, take you through the many moods of the film (and the exploits of Miss Holly Golightly), with an emphasis on Latin influences in the forms of "Latin Golightly" and "Moon River Cha Cha." Nevertheless, one common complaint has been that RCA could've remastered the music and added additional tracks to flesh out the CD. Maybe in the future... --Bill Holdship
