Phobia is a very solid record. While there aren't any really different tracks like Rain and Forget It on We Are Not Alone, they have tried different things. Some of the songs use picking much more prominently than on their past records, they've tried different tunings, which works quite well and they've tried different time signatures in "Evil Angel" & "Dance With the Devil" which shows they have progressed musically.
The Diary of Jane - First single, very good, great opener for the album 5/5
Breath - My personal favourite, esp the acoustic bit before the first chorus and halving the tempo at the end. 5/5
You - Heavy-ish Ballad, but lyrics are a bit of a letdown, still like the tune though. 4/5
Evil Angel - Different time signature to what they normally do. Love the drumming on this track esp through the verses and pre-choruses. Wonder if this song has anything to do with the album cover. Love it. 5/5
Until the End - A bit of a disappointment actually. Love the really heavy riff, but then goes off into a really poppish chorus and verse, but the heavy interlude is quite good. Still a good song. 4/5.
Dance With the Devil - Love this song especially the solo and the piano bit at the end. Great Song 5/5.
Topless - Brilliant Song, Great that they actually did a studio version of this song. Ben's voice sounds more raw and powerful on this track than on any of the other tracks. 5/5
Here We Are - In my opinion this song has the best solo of all the songs, good contrast to topless, Ben sounds like he means every word in this song. 5/5.
Unknown Soldier - Like the song esp. the bridge, Must say it does have a great chorus. 5/5
Had Enough - Nice and heavy song, this song is the track on the album that sounds like one from We are Not Alone, still very good song. 5/5.
You Fight Me - Interesting song, esp. with the piano intro, Not a song everyone will like, it is a love it or hate it song. I quite like it but the lyrics thru the chorus could have been better, still a very good song. 5/5.
Diary of Jane (acoustic) - This one is much better than the Rock version of the song. Its done on piano and strings. Absolutely love it. They should have put this track on all the album pressings. 5/5
I dont count the intro and outro to be tracks so I didnt really think of rating them.
Overall a very solid effort. The band certainly has matured and arent afraid to try new things which is a good thing. However, Ben's voice does not sound the same as it did on their previous records, I liked the rough and aggressive edge of his voice seen on the previous 2 records which is only displayed in all its rawness on topless. The new drummer Chad Szeliga does a great job on drums, which suits the songs on this record. Still a great record from a very under rated band.
