Free Music Notes for Breaking GlassFree Music Review: Don't miss this one! Hit: 5 Stars
The other reviews for this CD are absolutely accurate. I first heard this album (back when it was a "record") in 1987 when I was in England, and it's as fresh to me now as it was then. Blistering but melodic rock that always seemed relevant to me ("At the top of the tower, there's a creature who wants power. Who needs it?"). Hard to believe that Ms. O'Connor was never widely known in the U.S. or that she never achieved super-stardom after an album like this. She can be hard-edged (threatening to kick Big Brother in the ass), yet fragile and tender ("This moment I am so unsure. This moment I've been waiting for. Is this something you've been waiting for, too?"). Hazel O'Connor did have her moment in the sun, and to paraphrase the last song on the album, she does not have to look back and sigh, "If only." Do not miss it.
Free Music Review: passion and alternative ideals at their best!! Hit: 5 Stars
The soundtrack of the movie, this album swings from the beautifully haunting "if only" and "calls the tune" to the punchy punky " give me an inch", and "blackman" and the futuristic anthem "eighth day". Hazel O'Connors voice ranges from sheer anger and frustration to shame and longing. Incredible sax solos and diverse styles make this my desert island disc! See the film to really understand the lyrics... poignant punk ideals crushed beneath the weight of "big brother". Anyone who was alive in the 80's will remember "will you", ..most people have sadly missed hearing the rest of this brilliant album. A reminder for all of us with any social conscience left , the film and soundtrack touch on all the issues...with total relevance to the here and now, this timeless album is simply the best.
Free Music Review: A Gem of Pink / New Wave Underground Hit: 5 Stars
I really enjoyed the punk / new wave cult classic film `Breaking Glass starring Hazel O'Connor and wanted this sound track ever since. The album is a fairly strong new wave punk effort. Listening to it often brings to mind the porn cult classic film `Café Flesh' for some queer reason. I believe Hazel could have made a perfect soundtrack for the movie.
Unfortunately O'Connor has virtually went unknown to mainstream audiences but always maintaining a strong cult following since the 80s. Seem her Bowie/Lennox-esque persona was to much for the average pop listener. Like other Nina Hagan, Klaus Nomi and other new wavers of the 80s O'Connor was something quite unique and possibly ahead of her time. Certainly she is an artist that any fan of punk and new wave underground should look into.
Free Music Review: A classic for post baby boomers Hit: 5 Stars
I saw the movie 15 years ago as a teenager. It had a tremendous impact on me then and continues to this day. Last year, I finally found and bought the CD thanks to the internet. I believe both the music and the lyrics were ahead of its time. Hazel wrote everything from social injustice to computer dependance/dominance within the world. These issues are even more prevalent in today's society. I enjoyed the music portion as well. Like the lyrics, she was very diverse (i.e., the use of a Saxophone which was not popular of the day). When listening to her music I can feel the passion and enthusiam of a musical genius. This is a solid piece of musical work for any post baby boomer to enjoy.
Free Music Review: Not The Soundtrack I Remember Hit: 5 Stars
Way back in 1980 when our family first got HBO and I was of an impressionable age I somehow caught this film and was instantly moved by the music. I immediately (somehow) got my hands on a casette tape of the soundtrack which I proceeded to wear down through repeated playings. I seem to remember the tune "pissing in a river" (as I later learned, by Patti Smith) as a prominent anthem of the movie and can't seem to understand why it wouldn't be included in this soundtrack? Is my memory somehow defective or are there tunes in the movie that somehow didn't make it into this OST?
