Bree Sharp has a certain elegant texture to her stylized vendetta of songs. The 24-year-old, who hails from Philadelphia, doesn't just captivate her audience, she triggers an esscence only found deep within the human soul. Although her first song, "America", is a bit on the weary side (it's not her best song, that's for sure), the rest of the album picks up with so much speed and determination, it makes up for any lost cause within the first ballad. "David Duchovny," a favorite among X-Philes, is a tale of obsession with someone you can't have. Despite the fact that this was hailed as a "stalker song," it really tells the story of wishing and hoping and dreaming and praying, etc. "Walk Away," an excellent piece on a failing relationship, is on level with Dido's "Hunter," and is presented as being one of the best songs about letting go. "Smitten" is a lot like "David Duchovny" in the sense that our girl Bree is once again chasing someone she can't have. We feel the longing, we feel the pain. Other songs that get kudos are "Not Your Girl," "Fallen," "Cheap and Evil Girl" (the title track featuring a plot--and music--most akin to glamourous spy movies), and "Fool's Gold." All of these songs feature a certain illuminating power to them. "Fallen" is a fantastic mix of heartbreak and peacefulness ("Little girl, little girl questioning me/ She asks why doesn't everyone have what they need?/"). "Fool's Gold" spits upon a world that functions as a usage of people (and a bad one at that). Perhaps the best song on the album, though, is the contagious "Guttermouth." Its twists and turns create an intriguing story of survival on mean streets and the girl who defies all the rules just so she can live. |
