Free Music Review: Zonky and Out of The Ordinary, Even Today
Hit: 5 Stars

The first thing that struck me about this album was the absolutely unorthodox instrumentation. In many ways, it did feel like a document of erratic tribal exploits. Other tracks, like "America is Waiting" and "Mea Culpa," display an utterly weird approach that still defies explanation. Other songs are deeply atmospheric in nature and transport the listener to some unknown locale. The most conventional track, "Regiment," boasts a groove of the darkest and most macabre variety; it's a perversion of the funk, and only a lone Arabic voice can bring light to this danceable nightmare.

There's nothing on this album that says "this should work," and yet, it all coalesces surprisingly well. Given the state of technology in 1980 compared to today, its easy to see why there's a sort of organic vitality in these compositions that's lacking in today's music. Rarely does such a strange work please the pallate so well.

Free Music Review: Two Geniuses Create a First?, a Classic!!
Hit: 5 Stars

When Ran & Cheddar grabbed me right after one of them grabbed this album in 1981 [on cassette & LP in those days] and we went for a long drive, I had trouble getting the name of the album but the music was hypnotic and amazingly brilliant. I didn't stop listening for months cos it touched my soul. Whether the urban legend is true that this is the first real 'sampling' album or not, it IS amazing and timeless. A 'DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR [& YOUR MATES]' album. Individually, Brian and David are modern musics equivalents of Mozart and Beethoven. Together, .... heavenly! This album is wondrous in its 'sampling' choices and original musical accompaniment to those themes. Each composition is a classic because of those two and we have the honour to share/hear their genius time and time again. Thank GOD!

Free Music Review: 90% of an Important Album
Hit: 5 Stars

The original album was a masterpiece. Though not widely heard of in its day, it was an outstanding work of art and indirectly influenced more popular music. The "sampling" and overall production were an influence on Hank Shocklee by his own account, who produced Public Enemy.

I love the record and am awed by the way Eno and Byrne made these intricate, flavorful creations out of simple ingrediants. Eno's most startling acheivements were generally done in collaboration with others and this is one of them.

All that said, taking a track - and a good one at that - out of the original running order ("Qu'ran") - is a flaming shame. History is available here only in a revised form.

Free Music Review: LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF ITS TIME
Hit: 5 Stars

I have loved this avant-rock album since its release in 1981. It was very influential on music that was yet to come. This is a worthy re-issue, sounds GREAT and the bonus tracks are OK to Good to Spooky. Some versions of songs ("Regiment" is one)are longer than the 1981 versions, as a previously reviewer has noted. Anyone who is a fan of this seminal, brilliant collaboration of Eno and Byrne should have this CD, which expands it. My only complaint is that it doesn't include the track "Qu'ran" from the original album, so its not quite complete. Luckily, I already had the original version on CD. But I still highly recommend it. If you haven't heard this one yet, you're in for a treat.

Free Music Review: I Had To Hear It Twice
Hit: 5 Stars

Upon first listen, I disliked this album intensely because of the presence of "vocals." The outer packaging makes zero mention of vocals when listing the instrumentation, so I felt betrayed, because I strongly prefer my electronic, ambient & dub music to be vocal-free. HOWEVER, upon second listen (after retrieving the CD from the trash) I soon got over my initial disappointment and began to realize that the vocal samples are artfully utilized as part of the overall musical collage, and with repeated listens are not distracting, but blend into the mix. With this fresh understanding, it wasn't long before I LOVED the CD! Thank goodness I didn't take out the trash!
