Free Music Notes for My Life in the Bush of Ghosts

Free Music Review: ...from ArtsyFartsy News, January2009
Hit: 4 Stars

This month's artist is Brian Eno. His work and music is everywhere. From film and television scores, quiet spa background music or just plain, good, wacky stuff, his collaboration with Talking Heads' David Bryne, Brian Eno's playful music is in my studio this month.

Fair warning - all of Eno's work is not for the faint of heart. It is however, an audible adventure: Early recordings of religious tent revivals, remixed over new world music is a hoot. It grew on me the more I played it. I even practice my drumming to this CD! If it's a Brian Eno CD, you get your money's worth.

Free Music Review: My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
Hit: 4 Stars

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts being a collaboration between Byrne and Eno is certainly an experimental album and it sounds a bit like electronic music mixed with avantgarde music. It does sound a bit like Kraftwerk and one can also sense influences from the likes of Clock DVA, DAF and even Pink Floyd. The booklet has very interesting linernotes regarding the making of the album and we also get a an excerpt from Amos Tutuola's book "My life in the bush of ghosts". No lyrics are included but but we get a nice list of whom plays what on the album. 4/5.

Free Music Review: Political correctness gone haywire
Hit: 3 Stars

I'm being charitable about giving this three stars, when it deserves only one. I own the original album copy, and the first CD release of "My Life...." and it remains one of my favorite 80s experimental/avant garde recordings. It was an era when artists weren't afraid to push the limits of expression, and peoples' skins were perhaps a little thicker. Those times sadly, have passed with this re-master.

How else can I characterize the cowardly omission by the record company (or Byrne and Eno) of the song "Qu'ran"? Heaven forbid they offend a minority of rabid fundamentalists, and deprive the majority of sane and non-violent believers a great song. Once again, it is weak willed corporations and cowardly artists bowing to political correctness, and making life just a little less rich and multi-faceted. It seems the only targets that are still acceptable are Christians and white males. I'm sure Eno and Byrne would have no problem bashing the Pope, but having a beautiful, fascinating song like Qu'ran-one that truly glorifies Islam, is wrong. Life just got a little less tolerable, thanks to some religious fundamentalist nuts.

Thankfully, I STILL have my original copies of "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" with "Qu'ran" on them....and I plan to play it LOUD.

Free Music Review: The music is good but...
Hit: 2 Stars

I didn't care for all of the repetitive samples of preachers and religious babble all the way through the album. Maybe one song but not most of the songs. I wish you could get it stripped down to just the music and lyrics that would of been better. It seems dated because of all the sampling anyway, it sounds stuck in the 80's.
This is in no way an essential album. Talking Heads album Remain in Light produced by Eno is an essential album but not this one.

Free Music Review: Whatever
Hit: 2 Stars

Took a risk buying this in CD format. I like David Byrne. He's very creative. I have always doubted my Eno threshold though. If you like his thing then you'll love this work but for me he's stuck somewhere back in the new wave sound of the eighties and can't shake it off. Sorry Brian.

Take a gander through the mp3 samples herein to decide - I should have.
