Free Music Notes for Tepid Peppermint Wonderland: RetrospectiveFree Music Review: Retrospective of one Anton Newcombe and the BJM Hit: 4 Stars
Anton Newcombe will be the first to tell you that he is neither mad, nor is he a genius. But the Brian Jonestown Massacre 'is' in fact Anton Newcombe, and keeping this in mind, you begin to gain an appreciation for this brilliant, volatile, often misunderstood, musical force. 'Tepid Peppermint Wonderland' rides the coat-tails of DIG, basically a patchwork of editted footage over 7 years, which in fact Anton believes misrepresents the band. This two CD set handpicks a nice collection of songs from the BJM's prolific catalogue, but like most compilations, certainly not reflective of their best work. But included are some gems, definitley required hearing, eg, 'That Girl Suicide, Nailing Honey To The Bee, Who, Sailor, Hide And Seek (live), and Wisdom'. Neo psychadelic grooves, infused with space cowboy twang and glazy-eyed mysticism. Take your pick, rarely will you find a weak song in the BJM's catalogue. Yet if you probe further, some of these songs are actually covers of obscure 60's bands, but that doesn't really matter. Anton's mind is an analytical symphony of melody, and because there's so much attention paid to his erratic behaviour, people tend to overlook his brilliant sense of musicality. There is one quote from DIG, paraphrased, 'Anton is like one of these people who stumble out of the desert, as if he has seen God'. In his own mind, perhaps he has. 'Tepid Peppermint Wonderland', a BJM retrospective, is the brainchild of one of America's most misunderstood musical geniuses. There I said it. Genius.
Free Music Review: A very good Introduction to The BJM Hit: 4 Stars
This is a very good introduction to The Brian Jonestown Massacre. This however, is by no means a "Best Of" compilation. Regardless of other people's opinions about what influences Anton A. Newcombe's songwriting process, the music here is amazing and speaks for itself! Though the track selections are great, there are just as many, if not more songs of equal greatness on the rest of the albums this compilation is compiled from. There are a number of heart-hitting tracks on here that will make you cry, energized, happy, etc. Given the rate that this band has put out music over the years and the amount of songs per album, it can be overwhelming to find a starting point. This compilation grabs nicely from the more shoe-gazer album "Methodrone," the 60's rock 'n' roll of "Take It From The Man," the country-esque "Thank God For Mental Illness, the neo-psychedelic "Give It Back," "...And This Is Our Music," "Their Satanic Majesties Second Request," the more modernized "Bravery Repition and Noise," as well as a few rarites. This 2-disc collection presents a wide range of the BJM's song selections which have been sequenced quite nicely!
Free Music Review: Rock N Roll. Hit: 4 Stars
This is a great starting spot for anyone interested in getting a taste of what these guys are about. Regardless of what L.C Schlueter says in his "review" (click on his other reviews and check out his raves, Red House Painters & Low (snore). Dude, you have no reason to be at this party. You weren't invited. My favorite quote of his review, other than the fact that he gave it one star without actually hearing it (?!?!) was "depraved human beings managing to somehow convince otherwise sane people in the industry of their talent" Um, otherwise sane people? Are you a lackey at Capitol or something? Anyway, go buy this record if you want to steep yourselves in some pure, blissed out rock n roll energy. Everyone I know has their own BJM favorites and this collection skips over a few but all in all it's very solid.
Free Music Review: Whew! Hit: 4 Stars
Right. I bought this after watching Dig! - mainly because the music sounded wicked-cool and the visuals rocked. Impulse purchase, I guess.
For the most part Tepid Peppermint Wonderland is great, the only problem is that there's so much material on the two dics! There's simply no way to listen to this record and go - 'Wow! I'm totally hooked!' and leave it sitting in your CD player for three weeks - just too much going on, I'm afraid. So for now I'm patienly getting to know (and love) this record little by little. Just don't buy this thinking that it's going to instantly make BJM the greatest thing you've ever heard. It takes a bit of time, but it is well worth the effort.
Free Music Review: Great CD, SHlTTY Vendor Hit: 4 Stars
1st: Long story short, ordered this CD 8-24-06, received 10-3-06. After a month I got upgraded to 2nd day air and it still took a week. Enough said. Beware of JR Electronics.
2nd: Anton is giving away all his music free on the BJM homepage. Go listen and then buy what you like.
That being said, the CD is great. Ill admit im a bandwagon guy. I saw DIG and now i gotta know what its all about. This is a good place to start for BJM. I gave it 4 stars because some of my favorites arent on here ("Give It Back" is my favorite).
