I didn't read the othe reviews and doubt that I will. first saw
Stokes" as he's called in "Ragtime" in New York. He was part of the original cast of stellar performers. But when he was onstage, he absolutely owned it. I adored the show. When he starred in the revival of "Kiss me Kate" with another of his "Ragtime" costars Marin Mazzie, I also went to see that (A fairly mean trick since I live in South Florida). The two of them had a blast together, acting the comedy and singing Cole Porter's glorious music. He sang a lot of Sondheim on the new album. Sondheim's a particular favorite of mine. And he sang freed from the constraints of the plays. He has a wonderful, expressive voice. I really hope to hear more of this incredible singer in the future - on and off Broadway. I know he loves jazz and I'm looking forward to hearing more jazz from him than "The Yellow House" with Michael Franks.
Free Music Review: Great Expectations: Greater Rewards Hit: 5 Stars
Every previous reviewer recognizes the matchless beauty of the voice of Brian Stokes Mitchell, his talent, artistry, charisma, versatility and ability to move audiences to tears and rapture in theaters and concert halls as no one else can.
The keen anticipation of the release of his new solo album may have set up an expectation that everyone will be able to embrace what is, after all, a lovely, original, quirky, utterly personal creation by an artist who has nurtured it in private as he has shared his prodigious talents with the world in so many other ways.
With time and repeated listening, those who weren't immediately gratified by BSM's long-awaited solo album will be rewarded with surprises and delights. This singing is just for you, gorgeous, intricate and evocative. And, as usual, he has left us wanting more.
Free Music Review: Simply Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
Brian Stokes Mitchell is arguably the biggest male star in musical theater, and he deserves all the acclaim that he gets- the man has a great voice. Naturally there had to be a solo album, and I was expecting a standard interpretation of Broadway standards when I bought this. I was pleasntly surprised that Mitchell chooses to mix some standards (like Sonheim) with some newer voices in the world of theater (like Adam Guettel). Additionaly he makes each song his own with unique, occasionally jazzy arrangements. Thus his "Being Alive" and "Pretty Women" aren't the same songs that we've heard a million times before. Mitchell keeps what's brilliant about the songs but he brings something different to them as well. Don't get this expecting your standard cabaret album, get this to hear a great voice singing great music in a new way.
Free Music Review: I Loved It!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This is not your typical Broadway music album. I was a little taken aback at first, as that was what I was expecting. It more in the jazz vein and that's ok with me. Think Al Jarreau (he does sound like him at times, especially on Losing My Mind). The arrangements click and who can argue about that great voice??? It's a nice change to listen to a Broadway performer do something different. There's a little of everything here. Standards (How Long Has This Been Going On?); Broadway (Just in Time); Sondheim (Being Alive; Pretty Women). The pairing of Take the A Train and Another Hundred People was inspired! They fit together like a glove. The set ends with the beautiful song, Grateful, which will have every listener counting their blessings. A great first solo effort that belongs in your collection!
Free Music Review: Something New Hit: 5 Stars
Dot implores of artist George in "Sunday in the Park with George," to "show us something new." Begin with a blank canvas, and take us somewhere new. Like some of the Sondheim shows over the four decades I've been exploring them, on first seeing them, their true beauty and depth wasn't immediately apparent. But taking each show closer to heart upon further study and listening truly took us--as Broadway enthusiasts--somewhere new. This is Mr. Mitchell's gift, in my opinion: taking songs immediately familiar, and casting them in unfamiliar and completely original arrangements. Taking a Broadway standard as a blank canvas, and showing us just one new possibility. This CD is cause for celebration of the vitality of the Broadway song.
