Free Music Notes for Brian Stokes MitchellFree Music Review: Brilliant and Versatile Hit: 5 Stars
I'm picking myself off the floor in shock over the negative reviews here. I'm sorry but we must be listening to different records. Stokes is the preeminent baritone of our generation... and if you can listen to him without getting goosebumps, then you must be dead.
This album is a delight.. for those of us who are longtime fans of his Broadway work, it gives us a bit of that but also shows us how much more he can do and how versatile he is. It's beautifully produced and a treasure. I would highly recommend it to anyone with discerning musical tastes who will appreciate one of the most gorgeous voices of our time interpreting showtunes, standards, jazz, and pop. I only hope he puts out more of the same... and SOON!
Free Music Review: I can't understand the negative comments.... Hit: 5 Stars
I think that Stokes Mitchell's Cd shows the astounding talent that this man possesses. I saw him first on the public TV concert version of South Pacific and couldn't wait to order everything that he has done. While I was surprised to hear his arrangements of many of my favorites, I was impressed with the depth and versatility and the range of his very beautiful voice on this very personal and well thought out work. He puts many of the jazz greats to shame and even though some of the songs are hardly new, he makes them seem that way. For those who criticize, listen again...at full blast of sound and realize that this entertainer is a national treasure. Keep up the good work Stokes....
Free Music Review: Beam Me Up, Brian Hit: 5 Stars
Got the CD on a Sunday morning and slipped it in. Immediately got wrapped up in his world. They don't call him "Broadway's Last Leading Man" for nothin. I happen to be a huge fan of his Broadway work, but that's not the point. If you can listen to this album and not be transported, I'm worried about you. Great mixture of standards and some more off-the-beaten-path songs. I think that smooth, sexy fun never goes out of style, but hey, that's just me. Brought me through the whole range of emotions. I may skip therapy this week. BSM, (hmmm.. that's a good title for a personals ad), you had me at "Who Knows". A total treasure.
Free Music Review: The voice of an angel... Hit: 5 Stars
I, like many of BSM's Broadway fans, was expecting something quite different from his first solo album. When I listened to this CD for the first time, I was surprised and not sure whether I liked the choice of songs or the arrangements. Now having listened to the CD more times than I can count, I see that it's an amazing piece of work. The songs and arrangments show the versatility and range of this incredibly talented artist. Brian's rendition of the last two songs on the album: How Glory Goes, and Grateful, brings tears to my eyes. The emotion he poured into the album is palpable. Buy this album!!!
Free Music Review: A Broadway Legend in the Making Hit: 5 Stars
Brian Stokes Mitchell ("Stokes" to his friends) is a hugely talented baritone who has starred in "Ragtime" and "Kiss Me, Kate," among others. TV viewers may remember him from the late 70's, when he played "Jackpot" on the CBS drama "Trapper John, M.D."
This is a fantastic compilation of show tunes and standards, and each one is a revelation. My personal favorites are "Something's Coming," "Being Alive," and "How Glory Goes." Mr. Mitchell is one of the great leading men of our time, and debut cd's like this come along only once in a great while. Get it and enjoy it!
