Free Music Notes for Brian Stokes MitchellFree Music Review: Mixed feelings. Hit: 3 Stars
Having seen him in person (Kiss Me Kate) and heard recordings of his performances in several other broadway productions, I was expecting to hear his wonderful deep baratone singing broadway ballads, or at least songs like that. In this, I was greatly disapointed. However, the album is actually what it says it is (as opposed to what I was expecting) and in this, Stokes demonstrates his great versitility. If you like jazz or have an open mind, it's a very nice album. If you want a baratone singing "This Nearly Was Mine" or some other broadway ballad - look elsewhere.
Free Music Review: The "Other" Stokes Hit: 3 Stars
I suggest that those who have been enchanted by the performances of Mr. Mitchell on the PBS specials, such as we, try to hear snippets of these songs before buying. Otherwise, you may be surprised as were we. This work will likely be well received by jazz-oriented aficionados but it wasn't what we expected. We're STILL great fans of this fantastically talented singer/actor and will look forward to more albums which are more in line with his "standard" presentations.

Got this after hearing brian stokes on the south pacfic album. He was great with those songs, this one has one or two good ones that show his voice.
Free Music Review: Not hating, just being honest. Hit: 2 Stars
I have been a fan of Brian's for as long as I can remember. Heard him in just about all of his shows and his voice is incredible. I read ALL of the reviews here and got the CD. I loaded it into my ipod and listened to it on the commute into work.
I know the man has talent....but this has got to be the most overproduced CD yet. He simply tries to do too much - produce, arrange, conduct and finally, sing and very few of the tracks come off as "on the money". At times he over sings, and his phrasing (especially on the more jazzier tunes) is questionable considering his past and musical accomplishments. On "Lazy Afternoon" - the way that he breaks up words and his overall phrasing - totally amaturish. I wasn't looking for or expecting a "Broadway" anything, I was looking forward to an experience and listening to Brian SING. He takes a beautiful, simple song like "Grateful" and all but ruins it by overproducing, oversinging and beating the listener over the head with it and what's up with the background singers?????
I'm really looking forward to his next CD and I hope he allows someone else to produce him as he tried to wear way too many hats with this debut CD.
Free Music Review: Great Voice, Poor Song Choice Hit: 2 Stars
I have enjoyed Brian Stokes Mitchell since I first saw him perform songs from "Ragtime" with Audra McDonald on the Tony Awards show. Since then I have caught a couple of his live performances on television and always been impressed. So when I heard he da a CD out, I ordered it - without benefit of sampling any of the selections. I am disappointed.
I have listened a few time to the CD to see if it grows on me; it doesn't. Many of the arrangements seem overblown, and Mr. Mitchell's interpretation forced. The album starts off with "Something's Coming" from "West Side Story." It left me cold, and it set me up - attitude-wise - for the rest of the album. I felt that emotions and meaning were sacrificed for style. And I didn't buy it.
There are tracks I enjoyed - particularly "Take the A Train." My suggestion to tbe prospective buyer is to listen to the downplays first and see if it resonates with him/her. What one person doesn't enjoy, another relishes. How else do you explain required summer reading?
Bottom line: I would buy another Brian Stokes Mitchell CD if I had previewed it beforehand or if it were in the bargain bin.
