Free Music Notes for Imagination

Free Music Review: Finally, a real Brian Wilson album, with all the fixins'!
Hit: 5 Stars

With all the pain and heartbreak in Brian Wilson's life, it is truly astonishing to hear "Imagination," his latest studio recording, which is absolutely brilliant, and certainly up to the standard that we've all come to expect from this great musical man-of course, the man who gave us the most loved American musical group of all time- the BEACH BOYS. Many critics and fans have compared this new recording to old Beach Boys classics like "Pet Sounds," saying it doesn't hold up. These people are missing the point. Brian has been reborn and is infusing his music with the same wonderful harmonies and layers of sound that we all love to hear in the old Beach Boys records. He produced this album, unlike the Jeff Lynne- produced BRIAN WILSON solo recording from 1988, which was great in spots but still was unfullfilling because the sound was somehow different, unlike Brian, as if someone else had taken over the producer's chair. But "Imagination" is wonderful and inspired throughout, with intricate harmonies (all vocal parts are Brian's) and terrific arrangements of some great new songs; the sound is perfect Brian Wilson, and the result is a masterpiece. The themes of the songs seems to reflect on Brian's happiness in his new life. Even though the album tackles sad themes as well, the sad songs have an uplifting feel to them. The recording starts of with a wonderfully buoyant "Your Imagination," which has a clever, melodic bass line (just like the bass lines on PET SOUNDS), and wonderful lyrics that are perfect for the summer sun. "She Says that She Needs Me" is an incredibly moving song about the breakup of a relationship, but the tune has such a happy melody that it gives off a melencholy feel, much like most of the best and most mature Beach Boys work, like "Caroline, No" or even "Wouldn't it Be Nice." "South American," written with Jimmy Buffet (who made a career for himself by applying Beach Boys themes to his music) is an ode to the beautiful South American coast, and would fit beautifully on any late '60s or early '70s Beach Boys record. All of the songs are standouts, with "Cry," and "Lay Down Burden"-an unbelievably moving ode to his late brother Carl, who died of cancer in 1998- establishing themselves as highlights. With "Happy Days," the tune that ends "Imagination," we see Brian Wilson start the song with some typically atonal, dark melodies before he allows the song to soar into a meditative assurance that he is finally happy, and finally making great music again. Check out this cool lyric that provides the chorus for "Happy Days:" "Happy days are here again...the sky is blue and clear again...everyboday I talk to...says man you're lookin' cool." That's classic Brian Wilson.

Imagination Poster

Japanese edition of his 1998 solo album with an a cappella version of the first single from it, 'Your Imagination', added as a bonus track. 12 tracks total. A Giant/ BMG release.
Brian Wilson's second full-fledged solo release is a tour de force of his physical art as the former Beach Boy mastermind overdubs himself into a chorale of well-tempered voices. Unfortunately, Wilson's coproduction (with Joe Thomas) leaves these feathery constructions floating on a too-thin instrumental base that comes nowhere near the oomph of Pet Sounds or "California Girls" or even the beaty stepping of Wild Honey. Only a couple of songs, "She Says That She Needs Me" and a retooled "Let Him Run Wild," hint at the sort of darkness that's driven some of Wilson's best work. (A second vintage Boys tune, "Keep an Eye on Summer," is also included.) And it's a mystery why he felt the need to hire Jimmy Buffett to help him construct "South American," Wilson's own "Kokomo." --Rickey Wright
