Free Music Review: Authentic Brigadoon

I agree wholeheartedly with every thing the previous reviewer has written about this excellent recording. It scores well against the McGlinn recording and although not being as complete as he said, everything is there that you need for a satisfying listening expeience. I would like to add a couple of things that make this recording special. Firstly all the Scottish characters are played by Scottish singers and actors, and this brings a real authenticity to the performance of the lyrics. I'm sure that American listeners can be annoyed by British actors in a British cast recording attempting not always successfully to pull off a convincing American accent and the same can happen vice versa for British listeners. There is an immediate ease with the Scottish performers as they sing the songs in correct Highland Scots. Loewe has written fairly authentic Scottish Music music and hearing it sung in a Scottish style is doing the fine score the justice it deserves. The McGlinn recording suffers - especially with Judy Kaye (fine performer though she is) - in this respect. As I am Scottish the phoney accents can grate. Maurice Clarke's fervent and heart felt rendition of 'Come to me, Bend to me' though not as melifluous as on the McGlinn recording is far preferable. He brings (as does George Dvorsky) his stage experience of playing the part which does show. Even the small parts are played by well known (to us Scots!) Scottish singers and I can spot some Scottish Chorus members as well. For this alone Jay records are to be congratulated.
As far as the name changes are concerned. It is understandable that Alan Jay lerner, being American, was not entirely familiar with Scottish names and for the Original London Production, a well known Scottish Singer and Actor called Ian Wallace was asked to authenticate the Clan names and make them less jarring to British audiences (although I notice that George Dvorsky in 'There but for you go I', (probably from habit) uses the name Mr Lundie instead of Mr Murdoch as it was changed for London). Some may say these name changes were unneccessary, but presumably Lerner agreed to it, and it is interesting to have both versions of the script recorded.
So - a Brigadoon that is authentic, well sung and acted, almost complete and with the original orchestrations. What more could anyone ask for? This would be my number one choice - but don't be without the OBC (for historical purposes) or the McGlinn (for absolute completeness).
