this album is more than a cd. when i listen to it, its like im swept up in an amazing movie. the first track, A Spindle... starts off with a man and a boy reading a story about friends moving away, and just that is melancholy. but the chord progression throughout the song is so completely hard to explain. amazing, thought provoking, emotive. track two is a splendid song in 6/8 which is more passive with the flute and woodwinds backing up conor's shaky voice and powerful diction. the third track has an amazing latin feel/beat and it is like some raging animal, without it being heavy, but conor's amazing voice sets the mood. the lyrics to this song are beautiful and fit together oh so perfectly. Something Vague is the fourth track and probably bright eyes's most well known song. while this song is still outstanding, its my least favorite on the disc. theres some great accordian on it, but overall its a touch too simple, but its still very good. the fifth track "Movement of a hand" may be my favorite. conor plays some odd electric organ type keyboard and croons an amazing set of words. six is Arienette, a weird, creepy and very dark track, but thats where conor is at his best, possibly. this is a hearty song with mainly just acoustic and conor screaming as he does so well. the seventh track is "when the curious girl finds out she is under glass" this is such a splendid sad depressive song. it is recorded on a 4 track which makes it sounds like it was recorded in a bad hallway. but its all piano with simple chords and conor screaming. "screaming is bad for the voice but good for the heart"-conor oberst. tracks 8-10 is the real meat of this amazing piece of work. 8 is haligh haligh, a lie, haligh and this may be his most sad song. its got a simple chord plan with lyrics about betrayal, and its not sappy. beautiful, heart rending. 9 is called the center of the world. it begins with an uneven melody of guitars and keys and then the lyrical bombardment starts. this songs best part are how the lyrics fall together in such a perfect manner and all the emotion that is conveyed with them. 10 is sunrise, sunset and has a lovely, melancholy jewish melody and the lyrics are long and this is a wonderful sonnet. track 11 (an attempt to tip the scales) is one of the weirdest and most frightening song ive ever heard. this is intended to be a joke about what people think of conor, but if you dont know it its very strange and disconserting. its starts with a lovely folk guitar blueprint and has great harmonies and lyrics thruout...then this odd mock radio interviews starts. it is not conor who is being interviewd, but someone playing him. but he speaks of all these terrible things happening to him as a child, and his psychotic disorders (i dont know if he really has them or not) but towards the end there are some sharp, painful bell clankings that leads into the last song, a song to pass the time. this is a simple guitar song with lovely enchanting lyrics. go buy this album and when you listen to it, it will draw you into a completely different place, seperate from all others.
