Britney Spears made a fantastic return in November 2001 with her third album, titled simply Britney. After a few months out of the spotlight, Britney stole the show at the MTV Video Music Awards 2001 in New York with her classic performance of the massive hit I'm A Slave 4 U. She didn't win any awards, but stole the show with her controversial performance and raw sex appeal. On November 6th 2001, Britney Spears released her third album. It went straight to No.1 in the US shifting more than 745,000 copies in its first week on sale. It didn't sell as many as her previous album, Oops!...I Did It Again, but it was still the fastest selling female album of 2001 - beating off competition from Destiny's Child and Janet Jackson. It has so far sold 12 million copies worldwide! I would say that Britney is definetly Britney's best album to date, because there is a huge improvement in the songs and she sounds a lot more mature...
The album begins with "I'm A Slave 4 U." This saucy slice of pop/R'n'B was the first single to be taken from the album in October 2001 where it peaked at No.4 in the UK. The video is absolutely phenomenal - very steamy! I'm A Slave 4 U is by far Britney's best single to date as far as creative genius goes. The trippy bassline is supplied with breathy vocals and a drippy beat that makes for one of the most infectious songs of 2001. The critics loved the song, but the fans didn't like it that much. "Overprotected" was the second single to be taken from Britney in January 2002 where it peaked again at No.4 in the UK. Britney goes back to her trademark pop roots with this classic Britney track - remeniscent of Oops!...I Did It Again, Stronger and (You Drive Me) Crazy. "Lonely" is a funky R'n'B number and was a hot contender as the final single to be taken from this album, but was changed at the last minute for "I Love Rock 'N' Roll." This is a fiery girl-power track about how Britney is through with her man and getting on with her life - a lot like "Don't Go Knockin' On My Door" from the previous album. "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" is, in my opinion, Britney's best ballad to date. The lyrics are beautiful and the song suits her voice so much. A lot of girls could relate to this song, and it was released a few days after Crossroads came out at the cinemas. Britney was also huge in the British tabloids after "snubbing fans" at the UK premiere of the film. All this press attention saw the single peak at No.2 in the UK in April 2002. "Boys" is up next. This is the album version of Boys, not the CO-ED Remix feat. Pharell Williams of the Neptunes, like in the video. This version isn't as good, but is still great. Along with I'm A Slave 4 U, it's the hottest song on the album! "Anticipating" is a disco influenced number that sees Britney getting ready for a night on the town! The lyrics aren't amazing, but the beat is catchy - you'll be bopping your head in no time! "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" will be the final single to be taken from Britney in November 2002 in the UK. This cover is good but not her best.
The album continues on a high note with "Cinderella." This is another classic Britney pop song, very similar to her early stuff and was written by the pop wizard Max Martin, but sounds almost identical to "Stronger." "Let Me Be" is a trippy R'n'B song that sounds a lot like something Aaliyah (R.I.P.) would have done. It has a great bassline with some good lyrics. Only problem? It's too short! "Bombastic Love" is next. This is another short song, but is still excellent - very corny, but good! "That's Where You Take Me" is a rather sicky mid-tempo ballad. Everything's going great, until Britney starts going, "La, la, la, la, la" in her baby-like voice! "When I Found You" is another mid-tempo pop ballad. At the start, it has a sort of swirly beat, if that makes sense! This is a big improvement on the previous song - things can't get any better, can they?! "Before The Goodbye" is such a fantastic song and would be perfect in the Eurovision Song Contest! The dance influence makes a welcome change from the brilliant, but familiar R'n'B sound. The lyrics are good (Britney wrote them herself) and she really does sell the song from the bottom of her heart. "What It's Like To Be Me" is the final song. This song was written by Britney's ex-boyfriend, Justin Timberlake and her choreographer/stage designer Wade Robson. Britney has a great voice on this song, but Justin is a rubbish songwriter - it has to be said!
OVERALL GRADE: 8/10
Without a doubt, Britney is Britney's best album to date. Britney Spears is the fastest selling female artist of all-time, shifting close to 60 million albums, 30 million singles and 10 million videos in the space of 4 years! She's gotta be doing something right! I don't really care what people think of Britney. I know I love her music and her and that's all that matters to her millions and millions of fans all across the world. People keep on saying Britney is going down the pan, but she never will. She's made too big of an impact on the world to slip away quietly. Trust me, she'll be around for quite some time to come. Buy Britney now from Amazon - it'll leave you desperate for more. Come on, girl, we're waiting for your fourth album - we all know it'll be corker!
