Free Music Review: The Hammersmith Odeon concert DVD is incredible
Hit: 5 Stars

It's hard to believe that "Born to Run" was released 30 years ago, wow. This is indeed the perfect way to pay tribute to that monumental album: a remastered edition, plus not one, but two DVDs. As to the remastered edition, it sounds very nice but not all that noticably better then what was already available. The second DVD contains a lot of great background materials and documentaries, but truth be told, I doubt that I will watch that DVD a lot.

The reason to have this is of course the concert DVD of the 1975 concert at London's Hammersmith Odeon. If you haven't been to that venue, it is quite small, but of course at that time Bruce was not the superstar he would become not long after. The Amazon editorial review describes Bruce as "pensive and joyless". Huh? Have they seen the same concert that I saw? Bruce is super-energetic, running all over the place, and clearly enjoying himself and the occasion. Interesting is that Bruce doesn't start playing guitar until the 5th song into the set ("She's the One"). My favorite moments include "Spirits in the Night", "Born to Run", with a refreshing sound (of course it was a brand new song then), and "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)", but truth be told, this DVD is a delight from beginning to end. A true time-capsule from 30 years ago, and yes, this DVD will get repeated playing! Highly recommended!

Free Music Review: You know the album...watch the hungry heart
Hit: 5 Stars

If you need convincing about BTR as a seminal rock and roll record I'll leave it to someone else. It's a soundtrack to many lives and the songs hold up without explanation. It's a hybrid album, the transition from epic songs to pared down songs, from beat poet to a new Woody Guthrie. But what I want to say is, buy this for the Hammersmith show, because it is there that you see a hungry artist and a hungry band--and a "band" they are. After Born in the USA, it was Bruce and the other guys (and still is). Turn off the lights, turn up the sound, grab a few beers, and watch this show. I have been to hundreds of concerts and even more club shows in my life, and I have never seen a band with so much talent, such great material, or chemistry. As Bruce says, he still challenges any band to match those elements from Hammersmith. And seeing Bruce before the stadiums is endearing and humbling...you remember that this guy worked for everything he got. And there is nothing as dangerous as great musicians put to the challenge...as was the case at Hammersmith. The making of BTR DVD is also great, for the same reason, for we see that genius is indeed hard work. Musicians in particular should watch this, to understand the effort undertaken. Buy this thing...and if you know Bruce mostly after the BTR era, BUY THIS THING. Because this ain't no Dancing in the Dark.

Free Music Review: Worth its weight in Gold- Philly loves it, Ed Sciaky would be proud Bruce....
Hit: 5 Stars

Hello Boss Fans!

I have been waiting for a digital deluxe edition of this classic album for years, well, the wait is over, but man oh man, is this sounding great. The Boss rules, we all know that, but wait to you hear the crispness of the horns on Tenth Avenue Freeze Out, the opening Fender Telecaster strumming on She's The One, which you never really heard in the original mix, incredible nuances througout are awaiting the listener.

The title track, Born To Run, sounds justlike the first time I heard it on WMMR in Philly, when my late friend Ed Sciaky broke the song, and this artist to a enthusiastic Philadelphia audience.

I used to see Bruce play everywhere in those days, most memorable where the five nights at the Tower to help promote the release of this stunning album. Ed Sciaky actually scored me tickets and I went to the show, and saw Bruce and The E Street band jump on Ed as he was doing pre announcements on the stage. I still remember those great concerts, and this new edition delivers some really great memories.

Bruce is the executive producer of this box set, and his musical ears and insight into this extensive project really will captivate the fans and first time buyers.

Philly fans,you won't be disappointed.

Free Music Review: Born to Run 30th Anniversary
Hit: 5 Stars

First off it has to be said that 'Born To Run' is one of those albums that should be in everyone's music collection. Not only is it a groundbreaking album, but it still sounds as fresh and has full impact even after all of these years. With tracks such as 'Thunder Road' and 'Jungleland' (with the best sax solo you will ever hear) this album has track after track of sublime music. This 30th anniversary boxset has the remastered album, as well as a documentary DVD with interviews with all those involved in the albums production and another DVD of the excellent Hammersmith concert. The documentary is about 90 minutes long and is truly insightful into what went on in writing, recording and producing 'Born to Run', it also looks at some of the impact and hype the album created as well. The concert DVD shows Bruce in fighting spirit, winning over the London crowd with a storming set that shows just how great he is live. There is also a CD sized photo booklet with a small essay and loads of images of the band at that time. This is a great overall package and not only do you get one of the greatest albums of all time, but you get a deeper insight into it's conception and an amazing live performance to boot. Highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Even long time fans will find new discoveries
Hit: 5 Stars

First, a technical issue:
Another reviewer was incorrect. This release DOES NOT contain the Sony DRM/rootkit software. Don't take my word for it, look at Sony's official list:
Amazon doesn't like URL's but you can Google "Sony DRM albums" and find many resources...icluding Sony's own...that list the offending albums. This one is not one of them.

Now:
I am fortunate enough to have grown up on the Jersey shore, and knew who Bruce Springsteen was before 1975. I've followed his growth since then, and have seen him in a number of his tours over the year. I'm an unabashed, unapologetic fan, and he is the only artist of whom I own every title in their discography.

So do this: watch the "Making of Born to Run" DVD first, and then listen to BTR again. In the car --where this album was meant to be played-- or by yourself. The eight songs on this album are damned near each one a home run. Collectively they are an amazing piece of American music making that have stood the test of time.

Then watch the Hammersmith concert video. And if you've been a fan for as long as I have, you'll certainly wonder where the last 30 years when and why Bruce and the band look so old:-)

Just a fine piece of Springsteen and E Street history. You won't be sorry.
