Free Music Notes for Born To Run: 30th Anniversary 3-Disc Set (CD/2DVD)Free Music Review: An Artist Becomes a Star Hit: 5 Stars
No doubt, Bruce Springsteen is one of the great rock legends of all time and one of our greatest songwriters and performers. While some might argue that his best work came after The River, I believe his best work is right here.
The music is fresh, the production minimal, the emotion raw and real and the music almost spiritual. It is a listening sensation rarely found in today's music because it is truly an "album." Track 1 was there for a reason as was Track 3. "Born to Run" is the the telling of a story -- if not linear, than emotional.
And that would be enough, but the additional DVDs take the experience to a completely different level. Seeing Bruce in that form in that environment is almost too personal. It is a rare opportunity -- and treat -- to watch an artist become a star by the force of his own will and the genious of his creations, not by some overhyped media and marketing team.
It is something I will share with my son when he is old enough, not unlike my Dad sharing Sinatra with me. There are artists that are transcendent and Bruce Springsteen is one of them. If you like Bruce or Rock n Roll this is a must have -- more so than anything else in the Bruce Springsteen catalog.
Free Music Review: Worth it Hit: 5 Stars
The remastered album will only sound different from previous CD versions if you have very good headphones or a very good stereo, but the concert DVD (Live at the Hammersmith Odeon London 1975) and the documentary (Wings for Wheels) are worth the price on their own. There's also a booklet of small but sort of grainy pictures, taken from the tour and, possibly, the recording sessions.
The documentary has all sorts of interesting and funny insights into the production of the album, as well as insights into Springsteen himself. The concert DVD has shoddy picture, which is to be expected, but the sound quality and the quality of the performance itself more than make up for it. The picture booklet seems almost perfunctory, an afterthought, but even still, there are some interesting shots in it. And, again, the remastered audio will only sound different if you've got good headphones or speakers to begin with, but if you have that, it's wonderful.
If you're a fan, if you like good documentaries, or if you like a good concert on DVD, get this album. If you just want the songs and you're not an audiophile, just pick up the cheaper, non-30th Anniversary CD (which I don't believe was remastered, but I may be wrong).
Free Music Review: On the Backstreets 'Til the End... Hit: 5 Stars
What can you say about one of THE great albums in the history of music? As interesting as the documentary was, and as great as it is to have "live Bruce" on DVD, the highlight of this set for me is still the original album. To my non-audiophile ears, the remastering job is an immediately noticeable improvement- listen to songs like Tenth Avenue Freezeout, Meeting Across the River and Jungleland. The depth of the sound is drastically improved, and you'll hear sounds both subtle and blatant that you never knew were there. Now if only Bruce would authorize remastering for the rest of his catalog.
These songs are just classics, and while it's not a concept album in the sense of The Who's Tommy, every track on here is essential to the overall story. There's no other artist like Springsteen, and this album and Darkness on the Edge of Town are him at his absolute finest. Music simply doesn't get any better than this.
Sorry for the short review, but I just don't know what else to say. Buy this set, even if you're skeptical of repackaged material with the dubious label of "remastered". You've never hear or seen Born to Run like this, and it will be like listening to the album for the first time again.
Free Music Review: Awesome album. Awesome reissue pckage Hit: 5 Stars
Truly one of the greatest records of all time gets the 5-star treatment in this reissue. If you don't already know that the album is one of the top 5 studio records ever released, you haven't listened. Fantastic from start to finish. No need to review song by song - it is simply the best collection from one of the very best performers in rock and roll history.
The anniversary package is very nice. First of all, the record itself gets an excellent remastering. It sounds great. The concert bonus DVD catches Bruce and the always excellent E-Street Band hitting foreign shores in England as the record hype-machine was shifting into high gear with the release of Born to Run. The show captured on the DVD is an excellent look at the band in this era. The concert is a good one and features a nice cross section of Bruce music to that date. The final disc - a documentary look back at the making of the Born to Run album - is very interesting and a joy for Bruce fans.
The anniversary set is well worth the price. These type of releases are not always done well. But this time they got it right and did a truly great album the justice it deserves.
Free Music Review: What's does politics and Sony have to do with it? Hit: 5 Stars
What is it with some people commenting on Sony and their copy protected CDs, and Bruce's politics, and then using that to rate this release? Nothing! Rate it on the music. Not the man, not the politics and not Sony. Those comments don't belong here. Rate the release.
Some people have commented on song selection. Well, there's not much choice in song selection when you're releasing a 30th anniversary re-release of an album. You're kind of stuck with the son choice. ;)
As for Sony, well... just don't buy anything from them. But don't get on here and rate something down because you have something against Sony.
As for the politics, well... that poster would have to be Republican. Get over it! Republicans certainly were petty in the senate recently when they knocked back acknowledging Bruce's career. They are probably still bitter about Bruce's support of Kerry, or maybe still holding on to him not allowing them to use Born in the USA during the Reagan years. Get over it! Bruce for the Senate!!!
As for the music, yes, I am going to rate it. This is a true masterpiece. Nothing more to say than that, but give it 5 stars.
