Free Music Notes for Born To Run: 30th Anniversary 3-Disc Set (CD/2DVD)Free Music Review: Perfection in a Historical Context Hit: 5 Stars
The perfection of each number makes Born to Run an extraordinary release that defines time. And this unique CD and 2-DVD is an essential exploration of the power and musical genius of Bruce Springsteen.
The Hammersmith Odeon - November 1975 - concert DVD is worth the price of admission, as larger-than-life myths have surrounded this first gig outside the U.S. Though truth can be stranger than fiction - Springsteen has joked for years about the bored-looking British media occupying the first couple of rows - the band delivered an astonishing show in a historical venue in a rare display of a group living up to the hype from a record company's PR onslaught.
The DVD on the making of the album is highly informative and avoids the trappings of simply being a saccharine sketch muddled by egos; it is a lesson on how such features should be produced.
While many boxed sets supplement the original release - and are seemingly packaged for collectors - this is as perfect place to start for new fans as it is for those looking to bolster their CD/DVD library of Springsteen/E Street Band material.
Free Music Review: Great album and package Hit: 5 Stars
This is great stuff. The original album needs no introduction every track is a winner - its a 5 star album. From Thunder Road to Jungleland via Backstreets this is one of the great Springsteen albums. Perhaps what make this album standout from other Springsteen albums is its epic scale. This isn't prog-rock though, despite the length of some of the tracks. As I think Springsteen once said, he was trying to capture the drive of the Rolling Stones (at there early 70's peak), with the voice of Roy Orbison, and the production of Phil Spector. An ambitious combination, but the result is worth it.
The documentary DVD is interesting, but you may only watch it once - however documentaries are very subjective and what I found uninteresting you may love.
The concert DVD as other people have said is a bit dark! However, the performances are excellent, the E Street band are on fire, and I found it enthralling to see (or not!) Bruce and the band 30 years ago performing with such passion.
If you haven't already got Born to Run you should buy this, if you have, do what I did and get as a birthday present.
Free Music Review: No miscues, this is the perfect 5 Stars
.......of a perfect record. I bought this deluxe box simply because Born To Run is one of the finest records ever made by anyone. I'm not a big Springsteen fan either, trust me on that. Every album he's made after this (or before) falls short of what's found on this. A DVD peformance of the band during this phase and the "making of" documentary are both compelling and worthwhile things to have. Why wouldn't you want them? Why would you want bonus tracks on the album itself for that matter? What would bonus tracks do to enhance this record???
Born To Run is perfection, and you never ever mess with perfect things. The audio on the album itself is steller and the anniversary DVD's are more than worthwhile owning. Folks like myself will love going back in time watching the recording session and watching a hungry E Street Band putting forth. They'll also love listening to the albums' stories and tales being told again. Kids might even like what real rock music sounds like if they buy this.
Five stars and beyond here. This is such a no brainer of a purchase.
Free Music Review: Why the DVD is essential! Hit: 5 Stars
In 1981 I saw Bruce in L.A. simply because of his live reputation. I was not a fan, but I am open minded. 5 songs into the show it was clearly the best show I had seen. It still is. I bought last row seat behind the stage for his last show, took a friend, named ironically Bruce, who hated Springsteen. He was blown away as much I had had been at the earlier show.
Sadly the next few times I saw him, twice in '85 once in '99, were missing the spark of the earlier shows I saw. His band got too big,no need for his wife or two extra guitarists. So when I saw a complete concert was on DVD from 6 years before I saw him it was something that could not wait until Christmas.
I have always favored his first 2 albums, and there is plenty of it on this DVD. This is one of the single most important concerts on film. The only thing I would look more foreward to is a filmed version of The Who Live at Leeds.
As for the BTR disc, it sounds great, but how many times after 30 years will I listen to it? About as much as Abbey Road, Sticky Fingers, or Dark Side of the Moon.
Free Music Review: Born to Satisfy Hit: 5 Stars
This expensive package delivers more than promised. The DVDs are beautifully edited, sound wonderful in both surround and stereo and the cd is slightly crisper than the original cd. If you have seen Bruce S. since 1980 and have no idea about what he used to do with the E st. dudes, here is your chance to learn what all us R&R Dinosaurs have been raveing about. I was lucky enough to see the band in Mobile,Al of all places in 1976 and was blown away by the staging, lighting, theatrics[meant in the best ssense] but mostttly by the music and poetry of the lyrics. Bruce acted out the part of most of Greetings, E st.shuffle, and Born to run with a few Detroit medley covers for encores.
All that is on the concert dvd in wonderful fidelity. You will love this concert dvd which is worth the price itself. But you get the obsessive making of Born to Run also. What an insight...
If you like this music at all, you will love knowing what went into putting the sounds inside Bruce's head on vinyl. If you make one impulse purchase this year, make it this one.
