Old-school Boss fans have mixed feeling about the music on this album, saying it is too polished, and doesn't have the r & b feel of "The Wild...". Yes, the album is very commercial musically, but what a wonderful rock n' roll platter it is. Tracks like Darlington County and Glory Days have a live, spontaneous feel to them, like the E Street Band was playing at the local bar. Along with these catchy tunes comes the keyboard driven title track and Dancin' in the Dark, both songs lyrically darker than the upbeat music that accompanies them. The same can be said for Cover Me, except the track is guitar fueled. Working on the Highway and I'm Goin' Down continue to keep the good times rolling, and No Surrender and Bobby Jean show that friendship and loyalty and still at the heart of the Bosses' work. My Hometown, Downbound Train I'm On Fire complete the album, showing Springsteen's continued writing for the down-hearted and struggling folks out there. The music on the album is far and away the most surpasing that the E Streeters have layed down yet, while the afore mentioned lyrics, while most-likely over-looked by the teenie-boppers who flocked back in '85 are pure Boss. His peak, and one of the top-ten "Travelin' CD's" of all time.
