Free Music Review: The weaker of the two simultaneous 1992 albums, but still worth a listen.

"Human Touch" and "Lucky Town", the two albums Springsteen released on the same day in 1992 and without the E Street Band, often get a bad rap. This isn't entirely undeserved; Bruce flirts with generic rock more than ever on these two albums. For the first time in his career, the records were uneven, a far cry from the fantastic line-up of albums he had released prior.
That said, neither album is a complete waste, and taken on their own terms without comparison to earlier records, they're fairly good. "Human Touch" is the weaker of the two. Whereas "Lucky Town" explored true happiness in marriage (a complete turn-around from 1987's brilliant love-gone-bad "Tunnel of Love"), "Human Touch" is sort of an odd-man-out. Bruce comes dangerously close to a pure generic pop-rock album here, though there are a few 'deeper' moments.
It's not that there's a lot of bad tracks here, because there's really not; the problem is that the album is made up almost entirely of catchy rock numbers that lack any kind of emotional depth. There's little of the impact that previous Springsteen albums featured (or even "Lucky Town", for that matter).
The title track is a classic, and it rightfully found a place on 1995's "Greatest Hits", albeit in an edited form. "57 Channels" is an attempt at social satire, and while people run-or-cold on it, I like it. "With Every Wish" is, as the title implies, a careful-what-you-wish for tale. You don't hear too much about it, but it's another good song, maybe the 'deepest' here.
The rest are mostly straight & catchy rock numbers. "Roll of the Dice" may be about as generic as Bruce gets, but there's no doubt it's fun, and it sounds especially great thanks to professor Roy Bittan on piano. "All or Nothin' At All" is another fun straight rocker, and "Soul Driver", while good, really sounds like the late-80's/early-90's (if I recall correctly, this album was completed or at least started in 1989, and "Lucky Town" was recorded in a 6-month period in the early-90's). "Man's Job" is simply wonderful, as is "I Wish I Were Blind", and I don't think it's coincidence these two ended up next to each other.
The album ends with the traditional "Pony Boy", and it seems a bit out of place, but it's nice enough.
"Human Touch" isn't really a bad album. In fact, personally, I like it; it's great driving music. And it's not like every past Springsteen song has had deeper meanings in them. After all, "The River" was made up of both party rock songs as well as a deep emotional numbers. But that's the difference here, "The River" was intentionally parodoxical, and it's one of the greatest albums ever (not just because it's parodoxical, though. The quality of the writing is outstanding, plain and simple). "Human Touch" can't come close to that album, or any previous Springsteen album, or even "Lucky Town" But, it is worth a listen, it's just not a definitive showcase of Bruce.
