Free Music Review: Weak only when compared to other Springsteen albums.

"Human Touch" and "Lucky Town", the two albums Springsteen released on the same day in 1992 and without the E Street Band, often get a bad rap. This isn't entirely undeserved; Bruce flirts with generic rock more than ever on these two albums. For the first time in his career, the records were uneven, a far cry from the fantastic line-up of albums he had released prior.
That said, neither album is a complete waste, and taken on their own terms without comparison to earlier records, they're fairly good. Of the two, "Lucky Town" is the stronger release, and thematically a complete turn-around from "Tunnel of Love"; where that album explored love gone wrong, "Lucky Town" examines true happiness. In fact, this is Springsteen's most positive album.
The tracklist isn't flawless, but mostly consistent, and there's no really bad track. "Better Days", the title track, "If I Should Fall behind" (which is great here, but simply killer when performed live with E Street), "Leap of Faith", "Living Proof", "Book of Dreams", and "My Beautiful Reward" all exemplify the positive tone this album takes.
It's not his strongest material, but it is a good album, and far more consistent and thoughtful than "Human Touch". I've found these two albums work best as car CDs; they're fun to listen to while driving, but don't think they'll ever replace "Born to Run".
