Free Music Review: the gift that keeps on giving

Too often in this age of regurgitation (don't the Indigo Girls have a box set now?!) songs lose their luster and their meaning due to over access and overplay. That is why to release a collection of (mostly) gems, to clean out the closet, to purge one's self of cobwebs (as delectable as they may be), is such a meaningful and revealing adventure. Rather than use a box set as an excuse to rearrange old songs with that ubiquitous "new version" or "previously unreleased track," Springsteen has truly given us a gift that keeps on giving. On the way to work, I'm dancing with the bishop, Zero and Frankie. I'm two for the road, just me and my latte. Never before have I felt like such a lucky man, but there is still trouble in paradise because Mary Queen of Arkansas serves as my christening to Disc 1. (Christ, you'd think the Boss would dethrone this whiny bitch with a heart of stone!) Now, I have the strength to take 'em as they come, but I'll tell ya, my sad eyes get a whole lotta happy when I drive in my pink Cadillac over that rise, don't look back, and live on the edge of this glorious world. The wish: I wanna hear that thundercrack as I rendezvous with Cynthia in our dollhouse. We tie up our loose ends and be true to one another. However, when the wages of sin become too great and she wants a lover man of her own, she hops a leavin' train to Cali. Before long I hear that she's playing a li'l backseat roulette in some stolen car. The honeymooners, trapped in their lion's den, are so young, but not in love. They just rock away the days with some TV dinners and trips to the car wash. So here I am talking to my brother under the bridge, and all he says is, "Sleep on it," but I say, "Goddamn, how can I sleep on it when I'm standing on this thing!?" Anyway, he tells me, "When you need me, just call," and slips back into a restless night, like an iceman melting back into the river. So I'm sick of myself pleading, "Let me be the one," and I call up Mary Lou and I give the girl a kiss. Now I feel like the man at the top, seven angels watching over me, encouraging me not to lose heart. Once upon a time in a seaside bar, I heard a song reminding me of her, and I felt so good bein' born in the U.S.A. In my car again, homeward bound, it's been a long day. I ponder my wish and reconsider. It's hard to be a saint in the city, so tell me bye-bye. Shut out the light.

Next time you find yourself debating the worth of Bruce Springsteen, pull out this brilliant four-disc outtake set. With a flick of his grease-monkey wrist, Springsteen proves--simply by issuing long-unreleased material--why he's the most consistent (read: important) composer in the pop-rock field of his generation. It's there in a dozen included B-sides ("Pink Cadillac," "Shut Out the Light," "Janey Don't You Lose Heart"). It's there in countless rabble-rousing anthems, the singer's stock in working-class trade ("Roulette," "Stand on It," "Car Wash," "Brothers Under the Bridges"). But, mainly, it's there between the lines, in the small idiosyncrasies Springsteen detected within almost every cut that made him--until now--withhold this material. Some are glaringly obvious--the singsong "Living on the Edge of the World," whose lyrics were later lifted for the more sinister "Open All Night"; the morphing of several "Iceman" verses into sentiments expressed on Darkness on the Edge of Town. Some are collectible curiosities, like the starkly disparate alternate takes of "Stolen Car" and "Born in the U.S.A." And others are more meticulous, often coming down to a simple phrase, riff, or melody line that wound up flunking final-cut muster. And when you stumble across those tiny, fleeting moments, moments that would matter to only a true perfectionist, the true artistry of Springsteen unfurls in all its ragged glory. --Tom Lanham
