Free Music Review: Seeing the Film Again Brings the Music More Forward
Hit: 5 Stars

For those who have seen 'Les Choristes' once, try seeing it again and this time pay special attention to the music. The story and the enactment by the sterling cast is an extraordinary experience, but when the CD of the soundtrack is played alone, the brilliance of the compositions by Bruno Coulais stand solidly on their own.

Of course, not only because of the placement of the work in the film but also because of the intrinsic beauty of the piece, the added 'La Nuit' by Jean-Philippe Rameau is one of the true highlights of the disc. And the added piece 'Nous Sommes De Fond De L'Étang' composed by Christophe is also a work of great beauty.

But the choral singing as well as the orchestral pieces conducted by Deyan Pavlov with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra simply sweep us into a different world. This is a recording that bears repeated listenings, and not just for nostalgia purposes from the film! Grady Harp, April 06

Free Music Review: Beautiful music, refreshing ideas for choirs.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is from the original soundtrack of the film which means that some of the songs are short. The beautiful arrangements and inspired compositions by Coulais compensate, together with an outstanding double bass line which is stunning with choral work. The children have lovely voices and sound unpolished on longer notes which adds to the authenticity of this being a group of school children learning to sing. Worth buying the DVD to understand the story (with Englsih subtitles). It is beautifully filmed using soft pastel colours.
CD also has booklet with the lyrics in French and English. Unfortunately the English is a literal translation and needs to be rewritten to fit smoothly into the music, but well worth it if you want to use this beautiful music for children's choral work. Can work equally well with mixed or girls' voices. Wonderful music by a master composer who obviously understands children's voices.

Hello et bonjour!

Being hlf french i naturally heard much about this film. I think it absolutely rocks and whoever that film critic was who said it was bad, well you dont have any sense of what makes a good film and i doubt that anyone really careswhat you think anyway. Just because the film does not happen to be English or American does not give you the right to slag it off, the english can be so narrow-minded.
Now you probably all think that i m being really patriotic and yeh maybe but im not saying that all of you are that bad! lol! Anyway the boy who plays Morhange has the most innocent, pure voice i have ever heard and captures the heart of any listener. All i can say is go him! Tu es le meilleure et j'espere te revoir bientot dans beaucoup d'autres filmes!

Anyone who has not seen this film SEE IT!

Free Music Review: Haunting
Hit: 5 Stars

Like a previous reviewer, I heard a story on NPR about this movie and soundtrack. I was instantly taken with the beauty of the excerpt they played, and as soon as I got home I ordered the soundtrack. I have listened to it at my computer, in my car, and at work every day since I received it. Far from being put off by the repetition of a few musical themes, I find that the repetition helped me to become familiar with the music more quickly, and has given me more enjoyment.

I know that "Vois Sur Ton Chemin" is the most well-known track on this CD, but I love "Caresse sur l'Ocean". Sometimes a piece of music is so beautiful it hurts, and I find this melody, and the hauntingly pure soprano voice of Jean-Baptiste Maunier, lingering in my head all the time. If you like choral music, buy this CD. You won't be disappointed.

Free Music Review: Expertly composed and executed---beautiful music
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack, with music written by the film's director and another composer and performed by a real French boy choir, is great fun to listen to---kids and adults alike have delighted in the catchy tunes. It's true---the music is slightly repetitive, but nonetheless addictive and enjoyable.

The musical highlight is Rameau's "O Nuit"---many will also enjoy the minor, but still very catchy "Vois soir ton chemin", the theme song of the movie. The choir is impressive, especially in the lower registers which are usually harder for boychoirs to sing well---Jean-Baptiste Maunier, the soprano soloist is pure, clear and extremely effective. He definately knows how to sing.

The orchestra adds a lot---but the boys can also sing well unaccompanied. The orchestrations are superb.
