Free Music Review: High Quality Songwriting From Bryan Adams

One thing to point out is the fact that the material on this album, for some reason, came out much softer in comparison with his previous release "18 Til I Die". While that '96 album had quite a few ballads ("I'll Always be Right There", "Star", "I Think About You"), it also had plenty of hard rock and even an almost punk rock composition "We're Gonna Win". Here, the emphasis is put on ballads and softer pop instead of hard rock. Still this 1998 collection shows the greatness of Adam's songwriting. The backing musicians involved are the same as on the previous recording with BA playing guitars, bass, mellotron, piano and of course all vocals plus Keith Scott on guitars/six-string bass, Mickey Curry on drums, and Dave Taylor on bass.
The booklet comes with all of the song's lyrics and a few pictures of the band members from the recording sessions.
The album's content is heavy on ballads and soft pop for example the title cut, "Cloud Number Nine", "Inside Out", "If I Had You", "Where Angels Fear To Thread". Elsewhere I detected a slight alternative rock influence: ""How Do Ya Feel Tonight", "Fearless", "I'm A Liar". Also featured is a duet between BA and the Spice Girl member Melanie C. on "When Your Gone" that actually became a radio hit.
Completing the tune stack the are two more up tempo songs "Before The Night Is Over" and "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" with plenty of electric guitar but they are not really hard rock like "Black Pearl" was from the previous LP instead having a more pop-rock feel. One of my favorites is the love song "C'mon C'mon C'mon" with a structure that alternates between soft verses and a louder chorus but still very melodic. Adams also experimented with some electronic sounds/percussion in track number three "Getaway", another cool song.
When I bought this album I was a little disappointed by the lack of hard rock but it grew on me after a while! If you like alternative, soft rock-pop, and well crafted ballads, then you'll find something to like here, but if you happen to like all three styles I mentioned, then this is PERFECT for you!

Adams' 1998 studio album return put him back on solid ground on the charts in the US and became a best seller in Europe as well, spurred on the by the release of a Chicane remix of the single "Cloud #9" and the duet with Sporty Spice (Melanie C) "When You're Gone", a song that sounded very much like vintage Squeeze in style.
