Free Music Notes for Dylanesque AlbumFree Music Review: Ferryesque Dylan Hit: 5 StarsBryan Ferry claims he has never met Bob Dylan. (Forget about whether he knows Bob Dylan; I not sure any living person can make that claim.) However, Ferry does know his way around a Dylan tune, having been working at it for the length of his solo career. "Dylanesque" is, as the name implies, a full-blown tribute heavily weighted in favor of Dylan's 1960's glories. (Out of 11 tracks, only "Simple Twist of Fate", "Make You Feel My Love", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and "If Not For You" cover the decades after. And for the record, "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" is not a Dylan original, but it did appear on Dylan's debut album.)
Those who have heard Ferry's previous takes on Dylan ("A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall," "It Ain't Me Babe," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" and "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right") will find themselves in familiar territory here. Ferry is in fine vocal form, which is to say that he sounds as coolly detached as ever. It goes without saying that Ferry's interpretations will not make any fan forget Dylan's own (or in the case of "All Along the Watchtower" Hendrix's interpretation), but that's not to say this disc isn't rewarding.
Ferry obviously approaches these songs with respect and sincerity. He is familiar with the material and does his best to make them his own. I could gripe that the arrangements on "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'" are a shade too close to T. Rex's "Bang a Gong", but what the heck - they work. I could also complain that Ferry's choice of songs was a bit too obvious (did we really need yet another version of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"?), except that he threw in "Gates of Eden," the b-side to "Like a Rolling Stone". How's that for mixing it up a bit?
As usual for a Ferry album, the production, recording and playing are as impeccable as Ferry himself. If you're a Dylan or Ferry fanatic, you will want this disc. Casual fans may balk and neophytes may be confused, but no lover of great music will be disappointed.
