Free Music Review: A Rocking Debut Album
Hit: 5 Stars

Buckcherry's most successful album 15 was the album that got me into the band. I, like everyone, had heard the radio hits but I was very impressed by the songs that didn't make it to radio. As the years passed, I picked up every Buckcherry album I could get my hands on. I had listened to Time Bomb, 15, Black Butterfly, and, more recently, All Night Long all the way through so many times I basically knew the albums front to back. It was this album, Buckcherry's 1999 debut, that I put on the back burner. I had listened to the entire album maybe twice but only Lit Up, For the Movies, Lawless & Lulu, and Get Back had racked up multiple plays. It wasn't a reflection of the quality of the album, I was just into the others so deeply. Sitting down the other day to listen to this album, I found a different Buckcherry than the one I had grown accustomed to. Everything since from 15 on has sounded very-produced and radio-ready. They're not lacking in attitude, but they do now sound like a commercially successful band. The debut album has the attitude, but it's also got a younger band. They're more volatile, more raw, and (obviously) more youthful. The glam influence, the punk influence, and the energy of a new band are on full display. These songs are much more raw and stripped-down than the songs they'd go on to record. Is it their best album? I don't know, only time can answer that question for me. It is a terrific album, however; a flawed debut, but a great, raw rock album.

-Lit Up is the best known song from the album. It's still a favorite for me. Simple, but a great rock song.
-I skipped Crushed many times, but it has grown on me. Definitely evidence of a punk influence.
-Dead Again is now one of my favorite tracks. Punk-influenced, yes but compulsively listenable.
-The first ballad, Check Your Head, is a great song. It has a raw, garage rock quality to it and Josh Todd effortlessly melds screaming vocals and singing together, sounding great doing both.
-Dirty Mind is the "Crazy B****" of this album, but it's one of the weakest tracks.
-For the Movies is my favorite ballad on the album. It's catchy and has heart too.
-Lawless & Lulu could've been a single. It's a really catchy song and one of the most instantly accessible songs on the record.
-I like the bridge of Related, but it's one of the weaker tracks. Better-than-average filler, really.
-Borderline is one of my favorite songs off of the album. It's got a bluesy element, with Keith Nelson really flaunting his skill as a guitarist. An underrated gem.
-Get Back is one of my favorites here too. I (oddly) found a personal connection to the lyrics the first time I heard it.
-Baby is the "Sorry" of the album. It's much more original, less generic than most of their love songs.
-Drink the Water is another great song that initially went unnoticed by me.

I have a rather extensive group of friends who all hate this band. To me, Buckcherry is a shining light in a dark world, so-to-speak. Newer, popular rock bands don't appeal to me at all. Buckcherry is the only band keeping the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll vibe alive. In now way am I comparing the two, but Buckcherry is the closest thing we have to GN'R used to be. This debut album shows the band at it's most vibrant, their most energetic. It's an album that's definitely worth checking out and 12 years after it's release, it still holds up.

Buckcherry Poster

Once upon a time in Los Angeles--during the infamous mid-'80s Guns N' Roses era--the City of Angels was spewing forth dirty, blues-influenced rock bands. Little Caesar, Junkyard, the Hangmen--even the names were redolent of dirty rock & roll, Harleys, and barroom brawls. A new breed of rebel rock has emerged in Buckcherry--sober, tattooed blues-metallers whose charismatic singer, Josh Todd, boasts a compelling Iggy Pop-Jim Morrison-Axl Rose persona. Buckcherry's 12-track debut album, produced by Terry Date (Pantera) with coproduction from former Sex Pistol Steve Jones, kicks off with the nasty, aggressive groove of "Lit Up." While the song is irresistible, many might have a problem with the "I love the cocaine" chorus. Still, Todd's persona works well with the band's aggro, melodic stomp, and with bands such as the Black Crowes, Nashville Pussy, and Honky Toast keeping barroom rock alive, Buckcherry are a ballsy and bold entry into the fray, as suited to share a stage with Hanoi Rocks as they would be with Motörhead. --Katherine Turman
