Free Music Review: Smooth piano, smoother trumpet, rough recording

I struggled for a long time on ranking this one as either three stars or four, for a couple of conflicting reasons. I consider Bud Powell one of the premier jazz pianists ever, and as a budding (oops) jazz pianist myself, I try to learn about and emulate the greats, including Powell, as much as I can. After all, he has a chapter in The Jazz Piano Book dedicated to his style of play, so you know that his music and style are worth listening to and learning about. Also, I'm a big fan of jazz trumpet and because this work features an extensive collection of tunes and alternate takes with Fats Navarro blowin' out the lights and everything else in the studio, it could just as easily be called "Fats Navarro Volume 1". Unfortunately, the presence of Fats may well be part of the reason this recording suffers from such poor quality. It seems the producers were trying to EQ everything so that the trumpet and piano were in balance, but unfortunately, they often are not. So at any given moment, when everything is not quite right, one or the other suffers. There is also quite a lot of background hiss on a number of tracks, and some other tracks rankle with irritating cracks and snaps that caused me to start looking around my car for the rock or stick that flew in the window. The snaps of the bass strings and Powell's humming and muttering underneath the track are the last thing anybody needs to worry about. (Even though I once built my own music studio, I don't know much about remastering, but I would think that removing such distractions would have to be possible nowadays with the current technology.) What saves this recording is the wonderful selection of songs (Un Poco Loco is especially a treat), Bud's continuing fascination with and execution of the fine details of the music, the multiple alternate takes of songs that allow for comparison and contrast analysis, and I suppose some of the historic aspects of this group of musicians making music with one the most talented and short-lived piano greats ever to hit vinyl/plastic. So, yes, only three stars, but I have to say this is still a highly desirable recording and one that will get its fair share of play time over the years.

The 1949 session features the horns of Fats Navarro and Sonny Rollins (making his recording debut) on such be-bop anthems as "Bouncing With Bud" and "Dance Of The Infidels". This 1951 trio session with Curly Russell and Max Roach introduced "Un Poco Loco" and "Parisian Thoroughfare".
