Free Music Review: Essential Holly.
Hit: 5 Stars

I originally purchased this CD in the mid 80s when earlier popular music was being rereleased in CD format. I was particularly interested in early rock 'n' roll and this "Buddy Holly: From the Original Master Tapes" fit my needs perfectly. I'm amazed in looking over the number of Buddy Holly compilations currently available. I'm not familiar with them and can't make a comparison. However, let me indicate that I've been very satisfied with this disc and see no need to pursue the matter further. If I wanted anything else regarding Buddy Holly, I might get a copy of "The Buddy Holly Story" on DVD. It's quite an excellent movie and depicts his life and the 50s time period quite well.

I was a fan of Buddy Holly and the Crickets and had a number of their songs on 45 rpm records, which are now in bad shape from playing too often on an inadequate record player. It's great to have a compilation album such as this available. To me, it contains the essentials of Holly's music. I particularly liked some of the earlier stuff, such as "That'll Be The Day," "Oh, Boy," "Maybe Baby," "It's So Easy" and "Peggy Sue." When he started coming out with his more advanced stuff, including some with string backgrounds, my interest faded away. The early stuff was the greatest, in my opinion.

This is a good quality recording. The sound is excellent. It's out of print, but good quality new and used copies are still available.

Free Music Review: The best one-volume Holly CD
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a marvelous collection and by far the best single-CD collection out there on Buddy's music. Most people listening to Buddy's music for the first time can never stop at just one CD, so this will serve as a fine introduction to some of the best music you'll ever hear. Though these songs are all more than 45 years old, they wear well and are timeless.

Most casual rock fans can name only a few Holly tunes: That'll Be the Day and Peggy Sue, but there is so much more than that. This collection includes two of his most haunting, beautiful ballads, True Love Ways and Raining in My Heart. Listen to the innovative string arrangements on these tunes and you'll plainly know why Paul McCartney (who owns the Holly musical catalogue)adopted these arrangements ten years later as a Beatle. In addition, this CD includes the musicians and Buddy counting down as an intro to these two songs. It's sad to realize that just months later, he would be dead.

Perhaps the best song on the album is the amazing It Doesn't Matter Anymore, about a love gone wrong. Again, the string arrangement is years ahead of its time and makes you ponder what might have been had Holly's life not ended so tragically and prematurely. He was a genuine innovator and talent. This compilation proves that. The sound quality is superb, I can't recommend this CD enough.

Free Music Review: A great CD music collection from a great artist
Hit: 5 Stars

This wonderful CD does justice to an all-time great artist whose life was tragically cut short in a plane crash early one February morning in 1959. Buddy Holly, as the lead singer of the Crickets and as a solo artist, had a string of hits and memorable B sides that endure to this day. Holly was responsible for the huge popularity of rockabilly music, that featured an uptempo, twangy Texas-style sound that was widely imitated by other performers. "That'll Be the Day", with its catchy and intricate guitar riffs, was the template for country and rock groups of that period that imitated but never approached the excellence of Holly and his Crickets. Most of the songs are here, from the driving, pulsating "Peggy Sue" and its tender B side, "Everyday", to the underappreciated "Heartbeat" and the prophetic, wistful "It Doesn't Matter Anymore". The CD is not a true anthology because it does not include quality songs by Holly such as "Early in the Morning", "Raining in My Heart" and "Love's Made a Fool of You" but nevertheless this disc is a fine tribute to an artist and his group from the dawn of Rock N Roll.

Free Music Review: This will do until the eagerly expected box set
Hit: 5 Stars

Buddy is one of the first musicians I ever heard and I was lucky there as it could have been someone who didn't write his own timeless songs , have an extremely distinctive guitar style and create pictures in the listener's mind .

Buddy is a great communicator and he was very fortunate to have people with him who grasped where he as coming from with his ideas . Some of the songs are co-written .

Paul McCartney owns the publishing rights for Buddy's music , so you are helping Paul with a bit of extra cash too , if that matters .

Buy this for the kids as they will still be singing the songs 30 years later - it's like that all over this world .

We'll always be listening , Buddy .

Free Music Review: The best collection available of Buddy's music
Hit: 5 Stars

This collection features the very best of Buddy Holly's career. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered and sound fresh and clean despite being recorded nearly 40 years ago. The bounce and fire for which Buddy's music is well known throughout the world is present, loud and clear. The actual tracks on the album are very likely the tracks Buddy himself would have chosen for a true representation of his music.

An album to be recommended to both fans and people curious about one of the most important musicians in Rock 'n' Roll history. A highly recommended CD.
