Free Music Review: Talent on Loan from God...

Given the fact that this husband-and-wife team have contributed extensively to each other's critically acclaimed 'solo' albums, their pairing on this one isn't anything new. The eleven new tracks in this collection do, however, highlight their amazing, almost telepathic ability to anticipate each other's moves musically and create a powerful musical symbiosis. The result is a whole vastly exceeding the sum of its parts.

Julie wrote seven of the eleven songs on this album, and the pair co-wrote one ('Dirty Water'). As always, Julie's songs come from a place of deep, often gut-wrenching emotion. Powerful and profound, her poetic lyrics elevate the soul, and often testify, without a trace of preachiness, to the pair's Christian faith. Whether singing about sorrow and pain ('Forever has Come to an End' - with vocal contribution from Emmylou Harris, 'That's Just How She Cries', 'Dirty Water'), or almost unspeakable joy, redemption, even lust ('Holding Up The Sky', 'Rachel', 'You Make My Heart Beat Too Fast'), these two stellar talents consistently amaze and delight.

While a few mainstream "country" artists have recorded some of the Millers' songs, their original versions remain completely ignored by today's country music radio. This is a crime, as they are authentic, honest, and faithful to country's roots as "White Man's Blues" - so unlike almost everything else coming out of Nashville these days. They've garnered a faithful underground following, however, and Buddy's seven-year status as Emmylou Harris' bandleader hasn't hurt.

I can't possibly recommend this album highly enough - the only thing that would be finer is hearing these two perform live. If you have that chance (go to Buddyandjulie.com for a tour schedule) don't pass it up!
