Free Music Notes for Buena Vista Social ClubFree Music Review: Aesome Latin music, but Cooder is not on... Hit: 4 StarsLet me start of by saying that once we take away Ry Cooder's guitar playing on this, we have very authentic Cuban music. Ibrahim Ferrer, Campay Segundo, Eliades Ochoa (El Carretero is by far my favorite song), and especially Rueben Gonzalez are all fantastic musicians who make this CD. Ry Cooder on the other hand, with his twangy 'slide' guitar is awful. As musicians, especially ones who play in music with room for improvisation, we are taught that there is no worse crime than being insensitive to what the people you are playing with are doing. You have to fit in with what their doing, and they have to fit with what your doing. Cooder does not fit with the people he is playing with. He would be well-advised to merely produce this record and lay out on ALL the tracks. But looking past him, you find a CD that is a great intro to authentic Cuban that is a must for all CD collectors.
Free Music Review: I love this cd. Hit: 5 StarsI saw the video on PBS a couple of years ago. I was instantly hooked. I don't speak Spanish but like other reviewers have said, music is a universal language, and the beauty of this music proves that. I highly recommend this cd as a must own.
Free Music Review: Cuban Music Like Mama Used To Make Hit: 5 StarsI happen to come across this cd by sheer luck. It is the best cd that I have purchased to date. I mixes latin jazz, big band and ballroom music all together. There are several fun songs with a deep routed soul that I thought had been lost. Even if you do not understand spanish this is a wonderful treasure to have in your collection.
Free Music Review: Absolutely Unbelievable! Hit: 5 StarsBuena Vista Social Club's self titled first album is musical excellence. Focusing predominantly on son, a traditional Cuban musical form, BVSC delivers, and with spectacular results. This collaborative masterpiece between BVSC and Ry Cooder simply must be experienced. From the first chords on the tres on "Chan Chan" to the final notes of "La Bayamesa", BVSC takes the listener on a trip to both Old Havana as well as rural Cuba. BVSC provides an excellent introduction to traditional Cuban music to those who are new to the genre, as well as a more than satisfying offering to even the most discerning Cuban music afficionado. In all honesty, I feel (and I think that most of this album's reviewers would tend to agree with me on this one) that to discredit this album is truly to demonstrate profound ignorance and lack of appreciation for son music, one of Cuba's oldest and most respected musical styles. In short, this album is ablsoutely essential listening and a must-buy, hands down. If you don't already own this album, buy it as soon as possible. You won't be disappointed.
