Free Music Notes for Buena Vista Social Club

Free Music Review: Thank You, Ry
Hit: 5 Stars

I find that a lot of world music is eerily similar to the quality of much music here in the U.S.: not quite worth being discovered. Every now and then, though, you'll get a pleasant surprise such as this CD. What a tragic thought that these sounds and artists might have been forgotten as they had even become in their own country.

Which brings up another point: it truly takes a pseudo-enlightened brat to look at this CD, what it's done for both the artists and those who've enjoyed it, and start squalling about Ry Cooder getting his filthy white hands all over it. My God, where does arrogance of this sort grow? Ry Cooder's hand was essential in bringing this to the rest of the world...otherwise you would have found it all on your own, now wouldn't you?

Hats of to Ry Cooder & these fabulous artists who have caused my CD collection to grow and my wallet to shrink.

Free Music Review: Never far from my CD player
Hit: 5 Stars

This classic CD offers endless enjoyment, thanks to the sheer integrity and authenticity of the players. Direct from Cuba, this music is played by some incredible musicians, many of them "senior citizens." But make no mistake, these players are more lively and innovative than most musicians half their age...or even a third of their age! The liner notes are deluxe and assist those of us who do not speak Spanish fluently. Producer Ry Cooder did yeoman's work in bringing this project together, which has since spawed a number of worthy spin-offs. It's amazing how many self-proclaimed "purists" have derided this CD, simply because it was a commercial success or featured an American player. The fact is, this project introduced many people to Cuban folk music in the same way that Paul Simon's GRACELAND introduced many to Ladysmith Black Mumbazo and other South African musical treasures. For that, Cooder should be thanked.

Free Music Review: Buena Vista Social Club Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

For those of you who are fans of the Buena Vista Social Club already, this is the masterpiece. A culmination of talented musicians, soul, love, and sultry afternoons with a cool drink getting ready to kick on into the night!

For those of you who have never listened to this style of music, don't just listen to it once as you could compare it to the first 3 olives you have ever eaten.

The first one shocks your taste with a layered complexity that is both sharp and mellow, leaving you with a look on your face that says "what just happened?".

The second takes you back to the memory of your first taste, and enjoying re-living the sensation, you start looking for more.

The third confirms your interests and instils an infatuation with something unique, powerful, and good for the heart and soul, that will be played over and over again.

Free Music Review: First Introduction to Cuban Music
Hit: 5 Stars

I've read through a lot of the reviews and for some reason, people keep complaining about Cooder's misplaced slide guitar, the true Cuban music, and the money gained from the CD. The slide guitar was a nice addition to the music and maybe I haven't heard "pure" Cuban music but the slide guitar really didn't make a difference in the wonderfully beautiful music... in fact I had to go back and listen to the songs again to actually pick up the slide guitar sound and even then I didn't find it out of place or annoying. Call me a victim of a "corporate-packaged" Cuban music, which I find ridiculous, but this is a delightfully magnificent album. Danceable melodies, and charming orchestration - the album cover illustrates the mood which permeates the entire CD - one of those hazy idle summer days. This is the album that broke Cuban music to the masses.

Free Music Review: Get Social with These Cool Cuban Sounds of Son
Hit: 5 Stars

As the Wim Wenders' film goes, Ry Cooder (he of the slide guitar) shows up in Cuba with his son, Joachim, simply gathers together the Country's older and greatest musicians and incredible things and incredible music happens.

I wasn't too familiar with Cuban Son music, but this CD transcends unfamiliarity as well as potential language barriers. You'll find yourself singing the lines regardless of what language you call your own.

One of the great things about this CD is the exhaustive liner notes that explain the history of the artists, their contributions to individual songs, the song history, plus a great bilingual scripting of all the words. It truly enhances the listen.

If you have been waiting to jump into the World Music fray, what are you waiting for? Start with Buena Vista, get socialized, and join the club, preferably smoking a big huge Cuban stogie.
