Free Music Notes for Pshychic

Free Music Review: Excellent
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a great EP from the experimental electro-rockers Buffalo Daughter. The music is unpredictable, hypnotic and just a whole lot of all around goodness. Most of the tracks are long, meandering and downtempo. If you like "I", you will not be dissapointed with this release.

Free Music Review: They must be "Pshychic"
Hit: 5 Stars

The Japanese trio Buffalo Daughter takes music and turns it inside out in "Pshychic," their latest remix EP. Their unique blend of electronica, art-rock and electronic kaboom proves that while this band is not straying too far from their musical origins, they're still expanding.

It kicks off with "Cyclic," with its woven guitars and organs, following with the chaotically brilliant "Chihuahua Punk," the vibrant "Pshychic a Go-Go" and the relatively ordinary "S.O.I.D." But Buffalo Daughter's true test is the grand finale: the 20-minute "303 (Live)," whose groove putters out halfway through before reviving brilliantly.

Two girls and a guy, creating multilayered music that blows the mind -- it could become genius, or it could become pretentious. Usually warning bells go off when an EP is this long, averaging about ten minutes for each song. But where other bands would make it sound stretched out, Buffalo Daughter makes sprawling sonic collages sound perfectly normal.

SuGar Yoshinaga forms the core of the music with her forthright guitar riffs, which can snarl in true rock fashion, or blend into the musical collage. Not to mention that those riffs are somehow interwoven with Yumiko Ohno's strong bass and entrancing electronic rhythms. Rounding off their sound is MoOog Yamamoto, who adds an extra edge with squeaks and turntable samples.

Buffalo Daughter kicks pretentiousness and preciousness on its ear in "Pshychic," proving that their eccentric electro-art-rock can only be judged by its own standards. A fantastic release.
