Free Music Notes for Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Once More, with FeelingFree Music Review: Perfect and moving- just like the episode Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is without a doubt, one of the best soundtrack Cds out there. I could easily just say that all the songs are wonderful. Here are some of my favorites: * Going Thru the Motions: this song has powerful vocals that back up some powerful emotions, as do many of the songs on this CD, and it also has the cute lines from the singing vampires that remind you why this show is so funny. The only problem with this song is that its too short! *Rest In Peace: Ok, so it didnt ever occur to me that Spike was going to, or for that matter could sing. This song is great- kind of rockish, it for some reason reminds me of a Bon Jovi song, in a good way. * Standing: My love of this song is only helped by the fact that Giles was always my favorite character on the show, and even if he sang an awful song I would probably still like it. But,this is the song which leads up to his decision to leave Buffy and Co. The lyrics are great and its great to see Giles finally express himself. * Standing/Under Your Spell reprise: Also, really harmonious and a nice mix of a song I love (standing) and the only song that I dont love (Under Your Spell) * Walk Thru The Fire. This is the big momentous song that all musicals have that kind of brings together all the characters singing different lyrics at the same time, and it just works so well. The lyrics on this song are the most poignant, for everyone, and everyones vocals just sound great combined. Other songs:Where do we go from here?,Ill Never Tell and Something to Sing About. (also, the demo Something to sing about, sung by Joss Whedon's wife is pretty good!)And dont think: Ok this person is a Buffy freak, she only likes the CD becuase of Buffy, its not true. I ocassionally watch Buffy and am a music freak. I love this CD becuase of the lyrics and honest passion of it. Buy it!
Free Music Review: Feel it Again and Again Hit: 5 Stars
There is no doubt in my mind that the sixth season episode "Once More, With Feeling" was written with Buffy fans in mind. Definitely out of the ordinary for broadcast television (even UPN), it did something bold, daring, and inventive. Singing on television? Who would have imagined? The performances are varied, from Amber (Tara) Benson's soft, sweet voice to the quirky Peter-Brady-esque novelty sound of Nicholas (Xander) Brendon. Sarah Michelle Geller, despite her Slayer status, is probably the weakest performance, but she tries hard. They all do. And that's the point. This group may not be ready for a concert at Carnegie Hall, but they perform well and add a new dimension to an already great series. Kudos to Joss Whedon for writing such a marvelous script! The CD is high-quality. For those who have watched the episode repeatedly, you may note some changes. The sound effects and speaking parts have been edited out, which I have mixed feelings about. One of my favorite moments in "What You Feel" is when the demon Sweet asks "The Slayer?" to which Dawn replies (in typical teenage fashion), "Ya-huh." Unfortunately, this little gem (and a few others) are not on the CD. To make up for what is lost, there are some delightful additions. "The Parking Ticket" is extended from what is heard in the show. Likewise, "Where Do We Go From Here?" does not bleed into "Coda," but stands on its own. Perhaps the nicest treat, however, is the inclusion of three tracks from previous episodes including "Restless," "The Gift," and my personal favorite, "Hush." If you are a Buffy fan, this one is a must to add to your collection. It's great music for reading, driving, or playing Buffy CCG. Treat yourself to one before Halloween.

I must say, this is probably one of the items in my Buffy collection I treasure the most. I LOVED the episode, and I was ultimately stoked when I discovered there was going to be a soundtrack. Naturally, I snapped it up the first day it arrived in stores. ;) It's a must-buy for any Buffy fan. Even if you're not a Buffy fan, any musical-lover will love this. I even find my college roommate humming a couple of tunes from it once in awhile, which she always denies - even she likes it, and sadly, I can't get her to understand the joys of the Buffyverse. *sigh* Anyway. Back to the review. The fact that Joss Whedon was not credited with an Emmy nomination for this work is an insult. Of course, the Emmy people said they fixed it, blah blah, but whatever. The fact that he wrote all of the songs make it even more special. The man is definitely multi-talented - he even lends a bit of his voice to the final track. However, it is the cast's voices that shine on this cd. Amber Benson and James Marsters in particular were gifted with fabulous, amazing PIPES. They make me wish Amber had a cd and I got to go a Ghost of the Robot concert once in awhile. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Anthony Stewart Head also give notable performances, and the rest of the cast isn't half-bad, either. The best song is probably "Walk Through the Fire", which includes all of the cast, plus Broadway alumni Hinton Battle. The disc also includes some extra instrumentals, such as the tracks "Sacrifice" from "The Gift" - which always makes me cry - and the excellent suites from Emmy award-nominated "Hush" and season four finale "Restless". All in all, it's a fabulous compilation. Five out of five stars, all the way. -- ayla
Free Music Review: Buffy the Vampire Slayer "Once More With Feeling" CD Review Hit: 5 Stars
Buffy fans will like this CD.
I really like it. Very pleased with the extra tracks not from the episode and the bonus track was neat. The cast of Buffy did a great job.
There's 23 tracks; total time play, about 57.3 minutes.
CD came with an 18 page booklet containing artwork and photos of the cast. There are a few pages by Joss Whedon where he explains a bit about the musical, and the bonus track his wife and he did. Lyrics and the names of the characters who sing the lines are included. Yes, the lyrics to "The Mustard" are there.
There's no sound effects like in the show. For example there's no bottle smash sound in "Rest In Peace". Wasn't sure I'd like it without sound effects but turns out I do. It makes it nicer to listen to.
In "What You Feel" the part where Dawn asked the demon if he's just bringing the fun in, is not there. Maybe because it was a spoken part. However, the part where she sings about how she doesn't want to be late, is in the song.
The song "I've Got A Theory / Bunnies / If We're Together" has an ending to it, "If We're Together", that is nice and about a minute long. I don't recall it being in the show.
There are three cool instrumental tracks, (two with some vocals), from other episodes. One track from each of these Buffy episodes; "Restless", "Hush", and "The Gift".
By the way, it's great music to listen to while playing "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and/or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer Chaos Bleeds". Really; listening to the CD, and hearing Sarah Michelle Gellar singing "Going Through The Motions" or "Something To Sing About", while you're kicking some vampire butt is just cool.
Free Music Review: It Gave ME Something to Sing About Hit: 5 Stars
From what was probably the most ambitious and entertaining hour of television last season (for any show), comes the soundtrack, which is packed with all of the songs featured in the episode "Once More, With Feeling". In my opinion, that episode is the greatest episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer yet, and part of that is because of the music. Breaking away from the tradition of lip-synching, each cast member took to the microphone and sang their little hearts out. And while they aren't the greatest singers in the world, they proved that they are much more than just actors on a TV show. They sing! They dance! They slay demons! Now, I have never liked musicals (the only one I've been able to watch all of the way through without forwarding through the songs was the South Park movie!), but the songs featured in this episode were all great. And the fact that they were written by the creator himself, Joss Whedon, tells me that this man is a genius. Some of the musical numbers were just O.K., but a couple others were more powerful, like the group number "Walk Through the Fire", and of course, "Something to Sing About", when Buffy finally reveals to her friends that, contrary to what they had believed, when she was dead she was in a much better place and was actually happy.I am so glad that they decided to release the episode's music on CD. The episode certainly did not get the recognition it deserved (where's that Emmy, already?), but at least it got some special treatment. If you liked the episode at all, I recommend that you get the soundtrack. It's just more proof that this show is probably one of the best shows on television today. I just can't wait until I can own the actual episode as well.
