Free Music Review: "Lies, Deciet, Treachery..."
Hit: 5 Stars
This is one of my top 5 hard rock/metal/all time favorite albums ever. The chemistry in the band is perfect, the vocals are pure rock, the guitar is not over the top, the drums are solid, the bass is grooving, Ted Templeman produces it to with excellency, and everything about the members and how they perform all 10 tracks on this album is all to perfection.
Hard as a Rock - The album breaks open with this hard rocking track that sets the pace for the rest of the album.
Smooth Up In Ya - The single, which is catchy, grooving and rocking
Owed To Joe - some people criticize lead singer: "Marq Torien" for trying to be like David Lee Roth. I say that Marq is just paying tribute to diamond dave and flaunts it with greatness.
Shoot the Preacher Down - almost as though if you were to take Van Halen's: Loss of Control, and I'm The One and give it the Bulletboys twist.
For The Love of Money - Excellent cover, and probably my favorite take on this classic song
Kissing Kitty - Fun, and Rocking
Hell on my Heels - Excellent and Hard Rocking
Crank Me Up - Another fun rocking song that'll bring up memories of classic Van Halen
Badlands - Good song
F#9 - Probably my personal favorite track on the album. It's very catchy, the solo is jaw-dropping, the vocals are amazing, and it closes the album in high style.
Overall, this album definetley should've sold a lot more, and brought this group to even higher ground in terms of popularity. It's a lot better than most of the music that was going on in 1988 (when this was released). Although, people classify them with the hair metal phase of groups, I just see this album and band in general as a Hard Rocking group of under-rated musicians, I'll even go as far as saying that this is way way way way better than anything that both Van Halen and David Lee Roth's solo Band were putting out at the time. Van Halen had gone completely pop with (OU812) and David Lee Roth was also testing the waters with pop-rock (Skyscraper).
Bulletboys were criticized for being Van Halen clones, but they were much more than that...they were hard rockers carrying the rock n' roll banner forward with stride and excellency, if anything they were worthy successors to the original Van Halen, and definetley deserved to be in a bigger spot light.
Bulletboys would release two more albums with Ted Templeman producing after this classic album. "Freakshow" (1991) although not as amazing, still very great, and "Za-Za" (1993) a very good album, that deserved more credit than it got, and actually a good closing to what I see as a Hard Rock trilogy from a great band that should've gone to higher heights.
Well, at least we have the great music they left us with.
