Free Music Review: The next logical step after the Marvies...
Hit: 5 Stars

Hey, being a longtime hardcore fan of the late great Marvelous 3, I was royally bummed when Butch announced he'd be disbanding this amazing trio. Why did they disband?? Well, after leaving Elektra after they didn't promote M3's crowning masterpiece, 2000's "ReadySexGo" (I'd have said .... YOU to them as well!), Jayce Fincher (their goofy blonde bass maestro), decided he was leaving the band to concentrate on his wife's (amazing singer/songwriter Chrystina Lloree, who was their singer when M3 was the Floyds/Floyds Funk Revival--M3 + Chrystina basically) career--she released her solo debut album "Transcend", which Jayce plays bass on and Butch plays, produces and cowrote songs on--ORDER IT, a masterpiece!! Sooo, what does Butch do?? He doesn't replace Jayce, in respect to M3's lineup and the fact Jayce is like family. Instead, he disbands M3 on good terms and decides, HEY, I got an idea, I'll record a solo album!! Makes sense, as all of M3's songs are Butch compositions anyway, and he has the ability to play loads of instruments, engineer + produce records, so why not pull a Prince or a 1-man power-pop genius like Adam Schmitt and do the whole shebang himself?? Exactly!! Next step?? New record deal. He started recorded this solo record himself, took his time recording demos, roped in a few of his friends to help out (Nikki Sixx, Slug, Chrystina Lloree, Jim Ebert, Kenny Cresswell, Greg Lee, Harold "H-Bomb" Sellers, Matt Mahaffey, + Peter Searcy), and had the opportunity to choose the deal he wanted, as a few labels came to Butch with prospective offers. In the end, he chose Arista, as they gave him full freedom and LA Reid is a smart guy, plus they also have John Hecker from HiFi in their corner (John + LA next nabbed Avril Lavigne, and look where she is!!).

Soooo, now we have Butch's debut solo record, "Left Of Self-Centered", and I must say, it is tough to top the masterpiece and Butch's crowning achievement, M3's "ReadySexGo", BUT after listening a few times in disbelief, I must say Butch topped himself!! It picks up right where RSG left off, stylewise, but Butch throws in some personalized touches, like some hiphop scratching, a bitta cello sawing away, a guest appearance by Nikki Sixx on bass on "Into The Black" (Why?? Cuz Nikki is Butch's friend, he thinks Nikki rocks, and ...., Butch wanted Nikki on his record, maybe partially an ego thang), a Prince imitation, and more personal lyrics. The whole thing IS Butch's masterpiece, a dizzying disc of mammoth proportions!!

The songs are like M3 but more refined. It's 13 songs worth a damn!! LOSC is off to an hysterical start with the spoof "Rock Vocal Power", a funny skit on those "sing like the pros" audio programs you order from TV, plus he makes fun of Pro-Tools technology and puts himself down in the process. Then it goes right into the first single "My Way", a great pick, as it's sorta like "Little Head" with a twist, a song that says "F-CK conformity!!" "Suburbia" is like "Grant Park" with a twist, and has Chrystina Lloree on guest vocals. "Trouble" is like a better "Sugarbuzz", with slightly vague lyrcal content, Butch's genius lyrics could convey a couple just simply fighting and driving the neighbors nuts, OR a situation where he got his girlfriend pregnant, could be either-or, you really don't know for sure, genius!! "Alicia Amnesia" is a catchy, funny tribute to an absent-minded stripper. "Sober" could be Butch's best song yet, a not-exactly-a-ballad kind of song as it rocks too damn hard to be one. Haunting melody too. "Into The Black", featuring Nikki Sixx + M3's Slug (YAY), is like a better, more refined "Cold As Hell", just awesome with a cool arrangement. "Get Down", featuring Chrystina's vocals almost like a duet, it's like a better "I'm Losing You". Far Away From Close" is like a perfect power-pop gem (the whole record is, really, but this song could be a great single)!! "Diary Of A San Fernando Sexx Star" is a rocking tribute to a porno chick, but beneath the surface, you really don't know if he's happy or sad/concerned for this girl who threw her life away. "If (Jeannie's Song)" is a lovely sorta-ballad of regret. "Take Tomorrow (One Day At A Time)" is the cigarette lighter ballad of the album, just a non-cliched, lovely closer, and hey, he doesn't rip off David Bowie this time either, not that that was bad, it was purely unintentional, and Butch gave him co-writer's credit!! Here, not that problem. THEN, track 13 is a blank 15 minutes, and going into track 14 is a goof on a Prince-style ballad called, I think, "I Wanna Get Stupid Witchoo", which both works and doesn't fail to crack me up, hehe!! On the track, Butch also tosses in his take on a-ha's "Take On Me", an unexpected bonus, as a-ha are one of my all-time fave bands!!

Overall, Butch did the unexpected and created his true masterpiece, and it's only fitting cuz it has his name on it. Plus, the best album title in years, the clever "Left Of Self-Centered", which makes sense, is true, and is a nice twist on words. May Butch create more masterpieces like this forever in the future. This is a new beginning and it shows. Man, Butch is a living musical genius, no if's and's or but's. Longtime fans, rejoice!! Newcomers, may you delve in the musical magic Butch Walker creates, and don't forget to see the man live in concert, he'll change your life and and inspire you. Really!! One of the coolest, nicest, goodhearted guys out there, and a bit of a goof, you wouldn't expect him to be the genius he is, but it is true. LOSC is the proof and the pudding.

AMAZING!! Love the artwork and the use of vinyl and the 80s Arista logo, a sheer delight!!
