Free Music Review: Best band you never heard of... Hit: 5 Stars
I found this guy Butch through a friend, and I have loved his music ever since! He rocks and his songs make you feel something.
Free Music Review: Proving He's More Than a Great Producer Hit: 4 Stars
From the cynical mocking of hipsters in "Lights Out" to the very personal and heart wrenching "Joan", LETTERS is an amazing addition in Butch Walker's journey to find identity as a solo artist. Throughout LEFT OF SELF-CENTERED and into LETTERS there is a sense of Walker trying to separate himself from his Marvelous 3 days. With powerful songs like "Best Thing You Never Had" and "State Line" Butch Walker is doing just that.
In LETTERS, Walker is testing the waters; experimenting with folk sounds coupled with power pop rhythms. At this point, it is clear that he is still in the defining stages of his identity as a solo artist, and this album is his way of taking small steps. While LETTERS shows off Walker's signature guitar prowess and dynamic song writing skills, the album also features more piano ballads. These are quickly proving that Walker has a versatile sound that is rapidly evolving and perfecting itself. With his brutal honesty, self-deprecating lyrics, and superb story telling ability you have to note why LETTERS is a favorite among Walker fans. Look out Hollywood, you've found your poet laureate.
Free Music Review: A change of pace Hit: 4 Stars
I was caught off guard by this record released it 2004 by Butch Walker, since it is much slower, softer, and acoustic than he usually is. From Southgang to The Marvelous 3 and even his first solo Left of self-centered, Butch continued to have a more rock edge sound to him. This album is a great album onto itself, but may alienate some fans because of the change of pace. So if your a Butch walker fan, this is an album where he shows his diversity, but if your a Marvelous 3 fan, it may be to slow for you. Check out his new album out this year (2006), hes gone back to more rock/electric stuff with hints of this ablum as well, a good blend and the next evolution of his career. Also for the harder edge fans, check out Injected-burn it black, and album produced by Butch Walker. And don't forget his work producing the last 2 Bowling for soup albums "drunk enough to dance" and "hangover you don't deserve".
Free Music Review: At the forefront of Power Pop Hit: 4 Stars
Butch is back! "Letters" is a tuneful collection revealing a softer side of Butch's music. This is different then his previous material, as his solo career and work with Marvelous 3 have always been heavy on the mojo. That's not to say that there is not a ton on "Letters" to like. Butch has always been at the forefront of Power Pop and this release is no exception. The extremely pretty "Mixtape" really sets the overall tone of the album, with Butch's powerful vocals at the forefront. "Maybe It's Just Me" and "#1 Summer Jam" clip along at an enjoyable toe-tapping pace and "Race Cars and Goth Rock" is actually a country-flavored twanger.
