Free Music Notes for Letters

Free Music Review: Weaker than "Left of Self-Centered"
Hit: 4 Stars

I must admit, I was (at first) a little disappointed with this album. As a diehard Marvelous 3/Butch Walker fan, I was initially a bit shocked with the softer touch Butch employees on this CD. I grew to like it (heck, even love it) after a few listenings, but I still feel it's weaker than Left of Self-Centered, Butch's solo debut. It isn't quite as varied--all of the songs definitely have the roughly the same "feel" to them. However, it is a very nice album. Mixtape is, in my opinion, Butch's greatest song as a solo artist, and it alone is worth the price of the disc.

Free Music Review: Worth every penny.
Hit: 4 Stars

Did not know who Butch Walker was until I heard Mixtape on the radio. Following, I purchased Letters and was very impressed. To get an Idea of his potential download the live version of "Best thing You Never Had." Walker's vocal ability and acoustic talent are amazing. The standout tracks are Mixtape, Dont Move, Best Thing You Never Had, and Promise, which are accompanied by a range of expressive slow to upbeat tracks. Again, definately worth every penny spent and would recommend this album.

Free Music Review: Hey! Letters
Hit: 3 Stars

Unless you were into indie power pop in the mid-90s, what you've tasted of Butch Walker has been played out vicariously in others. Despite his brief stints of fame both as a solo artist and with former band the Marvelous 3, Walker has received his greatest success as a producer. That's not to say that his latest effort is lacking, in fact, by now he's mastered both the art of producing and what it takes to put out a pop/rock/emo record without joining the ranks of whining boys.

The album's signature song is "Mixtape" -- a piano ballad of sorts that made fans anticipate the album months ago. Rock listeners will sit back and wonder how Walker gets away with singing "You drive away from the car crash of my heart/ and I don't know/but you gave me the best mixtape I have" without prompting rolling eyes or sighs.

Of course, the album isn't beyond slow points. "#1 Summer Jam" sounds like an outtake from Marvelous 3's "Hey! Album" (1999) and "So At Last," "Joan," and "Promise" float along with an attempt to shift the emphasis from music to lyrics, though the listener falls somewhere in between. Luckily, we're segued to "Uncomfortably Numb," "Don't Move," "Light's Out" and the bulk of the last tracks which displays Walker's talented musicianship and interest the listener both musically and lyrically without challenging them to think beyond their means.

Overall, this is a great album and if you're lucky enough to actually know who Butch Walker is--you'll get this album cheaper than most pop efforts, and appreciate it much more.

Free Music Review: Why would anyone rate Butch Walker at 4.5 stars?
Hit: 3 Stars

Yes, Siree! Why would anyone indeed? Needless to say I got burned again! Perhaps his fan club are the ones writing the reviews, but what happened to the law of averages? 4.5 stars? That is almost a perfect listen, my kind and worthy colleagues! That is an above average rating, cremme of the cremme, top dog, best of the best! To give Butch Walker such a high rating is like saying that this guy compares to the big players of all times. And what happens when he really puts out a great album, does he go way past 5 stars to 8.5? No, he doesn't. 5 stars is the limit. Not everyone deserves 5 stars because if they did this would be a perfect state, where every artist is equal or better than the next. Butch Walker's "Letters" sucks to be a 4.5 star, it does not merit such a high rating. Too great of a compliment. One or two songs are okey, nice to listen to but this is no outstanding effort. No disrespect intended to his die hard and high rating fans, but please get a hold of yourselves or more innocent bystanders are going to believe the hype and then what? Burned! Out of good american dollars. All these trial and error baloney is getting old and urge you my dear and most valued consumers: Be fair at all times but do not tell me Butch Walker's "Letters" is a 4.5. Yes, I bought it but probably won't listen all that much to it. I am going to smoke a fatty and play something melodic and sad like the "Arcade Fire" and get over my loss. 3 stars no more for Mr. Butch Walker's "Letters". 4.5 stars? Who are you kidding? (obviously me!) Ciau Bambinos!
