Free Music Notes for C?UFree Music Review: Heavenly debut of CeU Hit: 5 StarsCorporate behemoth/self-proclaimed tastemaker Starbucks is promoting CeU's debut album along with its vaguely sweet dulce de leche lattes and mango empanadas as part of its Latin America month...and for once, they are promoting a worthy artist. CeU is the more thoughtful counterpart to Bebel Gilberto. Whereas Bebel Gilberto uses Brazilian rhythms, CeU has Brazilian instruments as well, such as th exotic-sounding cuica (sometimes called the Brazilian theremin).
CeU's debut is promising;she's capable of taking her place among other Sao Paulo luminaries-the late Suba, Chico Cesar (whom she thanks),and Ana Rita Simonka. Her album has a great deal of variety-it has something for everyone or every mood. There's the Afropop of "Rainha",the Spanish flamenco of "Vinheta Dorival",the ideal road trip song "Roda" and the smooth&spirited cover version of Bob Marley's "Concrete Jungle." "Lenda" is deeply soulful, putting Joss Stone&Norah Jones to shame."Mais um lamento","10 contados",and "Bobagem" are thoughtful and melancholy, showing CeU's emotional range."Valsa pra Biu Roque" is a stately waltz."Veu da Noite" sounds like a late night torch song in a jazz club."Ave Cruz" is a frothy reggae song that mocks the sappiness of telenovelas. Joao Bosco (whose spicy "Vatapa" is on Putumayo's "Brasilero" compilation),composed the "A ronco da Cuica",a song fit for Carnival. The closing song,"Samba no Sola" is a joyful and vibrant song in praise of samba.
CeU's debut is amazing, vibrant, and varied. It's a perfect introduction to the variety of Brazilian music.CeU is a talent whose future looks bright.Hopefully Brazilian music fans (and newcomers to the genre) will be hearing more from her.
Free Music Review: Classy Sounds Hit: 5 StarsI Love it! # 1
This CD is guranteed to not dissappointment!
It's worth it. The whole album is good. My 6 year old and 3 year old daughters love it and want me to play it over and over. Very relaxing and fun.
Free Music Review: Worthwhile but does not live up to Hype Hit: 4 StarsI had never heard Ceu before but I had a chance to see her live. A good performance blistered by a horrible sound mix. I bought her CD at the show in the hope that there would be more and I was right.
The CD is pretty uniformly good as Ceu has an excellent voice that translates into any language. Ceu understandably wants to try to separate herself out from rest of the Brazilian music pack and she does a pretty good job for the most part.
What I don't like is her use of a DJ who does the usual stratchy thing that really does not work on one of her songs and her attempt at geopolitics in the one English language song borrowed from Bob Marley but not really done well.
CEu tries too hard to be cutting edge. I like music on the edge as much as anyone but the rough spots on this CD show well that not all experiments work well. The good news is that with the deletion of two songs this is one pretty good CD.
Free Music Review: Refreshing brasilian music Hit: 5 StarsI don't know why this CD don't have more reviews. I heard Ceu (sky in portuguese) for the first time 2 years ago in a small bar in Sao Paulo called Grazie Dio. She has a beautiful voice and an incredible "presence" on the stage.I bought her CD righ after the show and it stays at my cd player until now. She mix brazilian music (samba/MPB) with modern samples and eletronica. The hole CD are excelent but the highlights songs are: Lenda / Malemolencia / Rainha / Mais um Lamento /Concrete Jungle (beutiful version of Bob's Marley music)/O Ronco da Cuica. If you like BossaCucaNova / Cibelle / Zuco103 / Marcos Valle, don't miss this CD.
Free Music Review: Beautiful Brazilian Hit: 5 StarsMany of the songs, lyrics in Portuguese, and its messages can be understood just by the beautiful sounds of her sexy soulful voice. The mood set by the music sways your body to understand what message she's trying to convey. CeU, meaning sky or heaven in Portuguese, is definitely on her way to becoming the next acclaimed Brazilian wonder. She has definitely surpassed Bebel Gilberto!
