Free Music Review: Great, but the first was the best

Sure, the songs don't age well, but they were never meant to. This is a period piece and should be appreciated as such. It's beautiful '70s country orchestra craftsmanship and great spoken-word lyrics with awesome comic timing. Extra points for songs that were so prescient about environmentalism and the disappearance of open space, like "There Won't Be No Country Music", though WOLF CREEK PASS's "Old 30" and "Glenwood Canyon" hit that note even better -- just part of the reason it's such a shame that album's out of print/unavailable on CD. I grew up on WCP and still have it on tape. It's his first album and for my money it's still the best -- stark & evocative, far less slick & repetitive than a lot of these post-Convoy songs, which get bogged down fast in novelty riffs & overproduction.

The linkage between consumerism and popular music finds a strange analogue in William Fries, a.k.a. C.W. McCall. Trained in graphic design and advertising, Fries invented his trucker persona while working on a bakery ad campaign and helped drive the trucker craze of the '70s with a slew of novelty tunes, few of which have aged very well. McCall described his delivery as a "walkin', talkin' singin' style," though emphasis always falls on his deadpan spoken wit. McCall never took himself seriously, and tunes like "Crispy Critters" and "'Round the World with the Rubber Duck" will inspire a laugh at just how weird the '70s could be. --Roy KastenCountry Music CDs
