Free Music Notes for Caf? del Mar, Vol. 5Free Music Review: soft chilling Hit: 5 StarsGreat music to unwind to on a weekend day. I own most of the Del Mar series and Volumes 3,4 and 5 are where its at. Takes me back to the poolside bars in the Greek Islands where I was first introduced to this series.
Free Music Review: Good, but too Rhumba-delic Hit: 3 StarsThis volume stands out a bit from the ones I already have as a deviation from the electronica/ambient/cool tone of the others. Although volume 5 is solid and enjoyable it is NOT a typical Cafe Del Mar CD. The music is more lively and danceable with plenty of rhumba-delic beats. This is not a bad thing, but is not what I expected either. Do NOT buy this volume if you want more of what is on 6 & 7: cool, calm, electronica/ambient music. DO buy this volume if you'd like some light, well-crafted breezy music best for brunch backgrounds or dancing in the living room on a Sunday afternoon with your honey.
Free Music Review: Greatly overrated series; not as good as the reviews here Hit: 2 StarsFor some reason everyone has heard of the "Cafe Del Mar" series, and I'm convinced its as much the catchy series title as the quality of the work. It tends to be the love of public radio music shows also (see KCRW, Santa Monica, CA), and probably the label had a lucky ride on the late 90s sudden penchant for lounge/ambient/chill etc. See, I read the reviews here and decided this was the one to take on holiday to Cannes as a gift to mein host. However, this CD passed by during dinner on the patio several times with nary a comment and my feeling was that its just not that great and rather forgettable. (In contrast, the far less well known "Cafe Ibiza" did draw positive remarks, and I like it better, hmm). I can't help thinking that we have been persuaded that this German label is cool, and are being sold otherwise mediocre mid tempo musak/jazz/soul from second rate/unheard of artists. The main problem is the jarring styles jammed on to this disc, you have reggae, jazz, R&B, soul, trip hop, new age for goodness sake, vying for your ear. The sum is not more than the parts here, and the transitions jarr. Compare the genius of Thievery Corporation or Kruder and Dorfmeister for making something thematically unified, which just "sounds right", out of other people's songs. Here, however, you are painfully aware that, "now its time for the cool "French" vocal, now its time for the reggae one, etc." Look, if it works for you fine, its warm, ambient, pleasant enough for the beach, but its just not the transcendent experience all these five star reviews crack it up to be. There are much better choices out there, see anything by Thievery Corporation, K&D, Air etc. Oh and for summer beach listening, the above Cafe Ibiza, or anything by Costes. And watch out, this is one of the earliest of the Del Mar series, and the later ones--which I listened too--are even more disjointed and disparate in content. Nice cover though....
Free Music Review: smooth, ambient, trippy, jazzy, ahhh...? Hit: 4 StarsThis is a wonderfull compilation of downbeat ambient sounds ... this album is the first true ambient album I came to love. By far the best album of the whole series.Downbeat, upbeat, chilly and smooth a real recommendation. The perfect music to chill and lounge on a hot summer day, or just to relax on a tired sunday noon!
Free Music Review: It's good, but it could be better. Hit: 3 StarsThe best of these series is Volume 5 and Volume 3. This one is OK but it could be better.
