Free Music Notes for Camelot (Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: simply the best, by far
Hit: 5 Stars

Now with improved sound, the original Broadway version blows away the competition. Richard Burton, a remarkably good singer considering that he had never taken a singing part before, is the definitive King Arthur, Julie Andrews is unsurpassed as Guinnevere, and Robert Goulet is wonderful as the self infatuated Sir Lancelot. After his "C'est Moi" (featuring the title line of this review), why would anyone else bother to perform it? The musical itself is of course one of the greatest of all time, with the title number, How to Handle a Woman (sounds a bit sexist, no? but it really is a beautiful love song), and What Do the Simple Folk Do? being my personal favorites. Even if you are not nostalgiac, this is great, great music.

Free Music Review: Best recording of "Camelot" FINALLY digitally-remastered
Hit: 5 Stars

"Camelot" is one of my 3 favorite musicals & the definitive version is this one, the 1960 Original Broadway Cast w/Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, & Robert Goulet. However, the old CD version of this was so poor(filled w/hiss & highly-compressed)that I held on to my LP copy. So this digitally-remastered version is a welcome find!(no hiss or compression; I even hear instrum- ents in the background I've not heard before). And what more can be sd about Lerner & Loewe's most glorious & varied score or about this moving show about idealism brought down by the baser elements of human nature? A MUST-have!!!

Free Music Review: A great classic!
Hit: 5 Stars

You can't go wrong with Richard Burton, Julie Andrews, and Robert Goulet. Some of the finest orchestrations are present here, as well. Richard Burton's talk-singing is competition for Rex Harrison, in I WONDER WHAT THE KING IS DOING TONIGHT, CAMELOT, and HOW TO HANDLE A WOMAN. Andrews does just as well with THE SIMPLE JOYS OF MAIDENHOOD, THE LUSTY MONTH OF MAY, THEN YOU MAY TAKE ME TO THE FAIR, BEFORE I GAZE AT YOU AGAIN, and I LOVED YOU ONCE IN SILENCE. Burton and Andrews sing together in WHAT DO THE SIMPLE FOLK DO?. Of course, there is Goulet's IF EVER I WOULD LEAVE YOU above all. Buy this CD now!

Free Music Review: An unrepeatable performance of a beautiful musical show
Hit: 5 Stars

This recording catches a rare moment in time when good fortune brought together a talented cast of singer-actors who were at their peak and showed it. The saddest thing is that dated video technology of the period and other factors during its run on Broadway missed the opportunity for visual appreciation today but, at least we have the haunting sounds to enjoy. I never thought of Richard Burton as a singer, but the feeling!!......WOW!!. And who could match the sweetness of Julie Andrews?....the definitive performance of Robert Goulet's "If ever I should leave you". Superb addition to any record collection

Free Music Review: Great music, great production, great voices!
Hit: 5 Stars

How could such a flawless cast recording be produced from such a messy show? Who knows? Who cares? When you have Julie Andrews, Robert Goulet, and Richard Burton on one recording, nothing else matters. Well, except the score, which is magnificent. Julie Andrews sounds like a goddess, not a mere princess, and Richard Burton's regal voice carries the character of Arthur as perfectly as Goulet's smarmy Lancelot puts forth his songs. Whatever the original production of Camelot may have been like onstage, no cast recording collection should be without this peerless recording.
