Free Music Review: The Camper's Reunion CD Is One of the Best of 2004

The Christian Republic of Texas is invading the Secular Republic of California? Soldiers singing love songs to their weapons? The chewing gum you like is back in style? Drug trafficking...payola... and suicide bombers? Cryptographers who contemplate the philosophical mysteries of transmission?
Don't panic...it's only a reunited Camper Van Beethoven's album, "New Roman Times". This strange rock opera on the subject of creeping McCarthyism, religious whackos, and red vs. blue states is arguably Camper Van's best album ever.
I must confess that my heart sank when I heard that the Campers, our very own beloved revolutionary sweethearts were reuniting. It's almost unendurably painful for a fan to watch one of their favorite bands go down in flames, by reuniting decades after their shelf life has expired. I used to be a firm supporter of term limitations for rock bands. All rock bands must break up after 8 years of service, and for god's sake, don't ever reunite!
When I finally put "New Roman Times" in my CD player I was floored. Bands that are reunited after a 15 year hiatus simply don't make albums as good as this.
In typical wise-guy Camper Van Beethoven form, guitarist David Lowery has said, "We decided to get back together to cash in on what little fame we had left." Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. "New Roman Times" is not a phoned-in performance from an irrelevant band. Camper Van's message has become even more immediate, in the current climate of paranoia created by the flag waving, bible thumping cretins of the Bush inquisition.
The rebellious and decidedly weird spirit of the northern California band has been sucessfully resurrected. David Lowery has said the band simply chose to ignore the passage of time since 1989 and makes no attempt to sound like a "modern version of themselves." ...."Modern" is a relative term to a band like Camper Van Beethoven who did a reverent cover version of the Sixties garage chestnut "Pictures of Matchstick Men" on 1989's "Key Lime Pie." Don't miss this if you are a fan of those rare bands with an intellectual avant-garde bent. Fans of Pere Ubu, Captain Beefheart and Steve Earle's left leaning root/country rock will love this CD.
