Free Music Notes for Telephone Free Landslide Victory
Free Music Review: Everybody's coming home for lunch these days

Got this for the classic band moniker and even better album title but stayed for the instrumentals--Nine of Disks being a personal favourite, closely followed by track 7 which sounds like souped-up Greek diner muzak with a side of mushrooms. Not that some of the lyrics ain't capable of bowling me over either--especially love that Oh No!, which starts off something like this:
I sat on the porch
Listened to the rain
Smoked a cigarette
And counted to ten
Oh no, here it comes again
That funny feeling
I'm almost certain I know exactly what the dude means. Even dig that Tina too so I do, with its Oh Tina, Tina sing-a-lel-uv-a-tyia wa-cha wa-cha wa-cha. And in the end Ambiguity Song is I think a consummate and congenial way to close out this strangely euphonious jumble of jangles. The cover is none too shabby either and sort of looks like how the whole record sounds, if you get me.
Speaking of cigarettes in rock songs, I think my absolute all-time favourite lyric is that bit in A Day in the Life where Paul sings:
Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
And somebody spoke and I went into a dream
That's just brilliant that is. Can't say exactly why I never forgot these particular lines but I never did. I do remember though being able to smoke upstairs on a double-decker bus. Good times. The Beatles, wha'? George Martin too of course. Just been over at that Sgt. Pepper's page in fact and there are currently just under twelve hundred customer comments! Blimey sez I.
Telephone Free Landslide Victory Poster
In June 1985, Camper Van Beethoven's debut album "Telephone Free Landslide Victory" was released though Independent Project Music/Rough Trade. The album featured the alternative classic "Take The Skinheads Bowling," which was recently featured in Michael Moore's "Bowling for Columbine" as well as a cover of Black Flag?s "Wasted." The re-issue includes the long out of print "Take the Skinhead?s Bowling Ep" and the previously unreleased "Wasting all your Time."This is a manifesto of a strange sound that didn't last long enough. David Lowery's pre-Cracker days were spent with this semi-punk, semi-ska, violin-driven combo and their debut stunner remains a staple, mainly because of the now-immortal "Take the Skinheads Bowling." But with gems such as "Opi Rides Again" and a wonderful cover of Black Flag's "Wasted," the album begs for numerous listens. --Marc Calhoun
