Free Music Review: SACD player NOT required
Hit: 5 Stars

At the time I originally wrote this review, Mute had remastered only four of Can's recordings. Later, the following titles were added: Future Days, Soon Over Babaluma, Unlimited Edition and Landed.

[original review]

Four of the greatest of Can's albums--Monster Movie, Soundtracks, Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi--have been reissued. Regardless of what hardware you have, they are remasters, and sound superb.

The best possible sound can be had with an SACD player, or other player which allows SACDs (Super Audio CD, a high-resolution format) to be played.

However, these are hybrid discs, and will also play fine on any regular CD player.

[end of original review]

Regarding the rest of Can's back catalogue: you may--for other titles--come across info which includes the word "reissue", but these are not the recent CD/SACD hybrid discs. They have not been remastered. Don't expect any sonic benefits from replacing an older Can CD with a more-recent version, unless it's one of the titles listed above. This can be confusing; Can's recordings have seen at least three major CD releases, at different times.

Delay 1968 was released under the name Can, although some tracks feature a line-up which predates Monster Movie. Primitive, but an interesting historical document for Can completists and obsessives.

Canaxis was released by Holger Czukay and Rolf Dammers (occasionally, it's mistakenly labelled as a Can recording). I'd recommend purchasing the outstanding compilation Ohm: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music -- available either as a 3-CD set, or in its newer version with identical CDs plus a DVD. A five-minute excerpt from Canaxis (here, credited to Czukay only) appears as track 8 on disc 2. Listen, then decide whether you need to hear Canaxis in its entirety.

If I am correct, Mute have finished their series of remastered Can CD/SACDs (but I am not entirely certain). If so, this would exclude the titles released after Landed, which are: Flow Motion, Saw Delight, Inner Space, Out of Reach, Can (self-titled) -- and finally, the Rite Time "reunion" recording (from the late '80s, featuring the return of Malcolm Mooney).

A controversial point among Can devotees: when did the quality of their releases begin to deteriorate? Some say with Soon Over Babaluma, after Damo Suzuki quit. Others point to Czukay's diminishing involvement and eventual departure, marking the downward slide at either Flow Motion or Saw Delight.

With Landed, Can began to employ more sophisticated multitrack recording techniques. Clearly a departure from form, but Landed is essential listening; if I think of it as having been made by a different band, I find it easier to appreciate.

Flow Motion has its moments, but lacks inspiration. From Saw Delight onward, I find little of interest. (You can guess: I am not disappointed Landed was the last of the remasters.)

For those overwhelmed by the size of Can's discography, consider the Cannabalism series of compilations. Cannabalism Volume 1 includes the most essential tracks, though some--such as "Yoo Doo Right"--have been reduced from the epic length of the originals (sensible or sacrilegious, depending on your taste or patience).

Cannabalism Volume 2, somewhat less mighty than its predecessor, collects other Can tracks. Volume 3 is drawn from the solo projects of former Can members.

My advice is to skip Cannabalism. Instead, listen to excerpts of Can tracks available on the 'net. Not your thing? Then forget it.

Otherwise: if you buy Cannabalism 1, it's likely you'll find yourself compelled to buy the originals, thus rendering the compilation irrelevant.

As for Cannabalism 3: better you should seek Czukay's best works: Movies, On the Way to the Peak of Normal, Der Osten ist Rot, and Rome Remains Rome. The first two are superior, and relatively easy to locate. The last two are available on one CD; a few tracks are omitted, because the entirety of the LPs would not fit on a single disc. Difficult to find.

Jaki Liebezeit's Phantom Band is mildly interesting, but not of the same caliber as his more-recent collaborations with Pluramon and Burnt Friedman. To me, Irmin Schmidt's solo recordings seem undistinguished, but I imagine he has his adherents.
